A lady in a commercial once said "Where's the beef." Well, when it comes to handwiches,, I gotta have my mitts wrapped around bread. But in another forum, quite a few like breadless, substituting slices of lettuce, et al.

What say you?

A Noble Beginning. In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich®, invented the meal that changed dining forever. As the story goes, he was playing cards and did not want to leave the gaming table to eat. He asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with his hands.

Some of us who prefer gluten free use tortilla wraps to contain sandwich innards. I'll sometimes eat chicken salad or ham salad by itself in a bowl with gluten free crackers on the side.
Never heard of using lettuce as a substitute for bread, but you may be onto something new.

No lettuce wraps for me.

I use a variety of low net carb bread, English muffins, and wraps as a concession to diabetes.

I found this zero net carb bread at the local Aldi. It's a little bit pricey but the muti seed loaf is a welcome change from some of the others.

Aldi offers a couple of other low carb bread and wraps.

I also use Joseph's Bakery pitas or lavash, Schmidt's Old Tyme 647 bread and rolls, Thomas Light Multigrain English muffins, Nature's Own 40 calorie, and Sara Lee Delightful 45 calorie bread.

I've found that it pays to experiment because some of the low net carb bread contains added sugar and causes spikes in my blood sugar if I'm not careful.

Love my bread but it does not love me.

I often use a lettuce wrap or tortilla but if salad type filling, I sometimes just fork it w/o a covering.

Sigh. Diabetic here, controlling my blood sugar with my diet.

But I'd dearly love an English muffin. Wait, that's right -- I can splurge now and again. :)

I rarely eat bread. I usually eat what used to be a sandwich as a salad and have found that I enjoy it as much. Due to my teeth issues, I am now eating softer foods or food cut in pieces, so can't eat a sandwich like a normal person anyway.
