Anybody Else Here Still Waiting for Their Tax Returns from Their Preparer?

This is the latest it's ever been to hear back from our tax preparer. And like an idiot, I forgot to make note of the date that Huzz dropped off the forms with them so I'm not positive how long it's been, but I think it's been at least 2 weeks. For the last 2 or 3 years, they've been putting in the letter they send with our tax prep packet to please get our forms in as soon as possible since they're short-staffed.

Especially concerning is if we have to pay both State and Feds like we did last year, it'll mean a trip down to the Post Office to send the checks by maybe overnight mail. (And what's frustrating about that is it seems with our Post Office, it's: "We offer 2-day Express Mail and Overnight Mail. But if you really need something to be there in 2 days, you'll need to send it Overnight. If you really need something to be there overnight, hahahaha, dream on!")

It takes longer every year for one particular financial institution to get the 1099 to us. But just as soon as we got it, we rushed everything to the tax prep's office. Usually, we would've heard from the tax preparer's office by now. I'm gonna call 'em tomorrow.

With no state taxes our federal taxes are really simple to fill out. The Turbo Tax DIY was not as easy to use as in the past but I did get it filled out right. The only additional income to be reported was from gambling winnings. 2025 was an exceptional year for not receiving a refund. Income from gambling winnings all the sources plus the interest, dividends & an annuity that we decided not continue made getting a refund impossible. The $12,00.00 combined tax break on Soc. Sec. helped.

Sat with our Fidelity account agent to adjust the % taken out for taxes so that next year the impact won't be as harsh. If we get it right we'll either get a small refund or pay very little. A lot will depend on the untaxed gambling winnings if we are as lucky this year as in 2025.

I always use TurboTax, and it does seem to be getting less user friendly. They also now charge $50 for the Help option (i.e., to connect you with a professional who can help answer your question), something I refuse to pay.

A friend told me AARP will do individual tax returns for free. I may explore that next year. My taxes are pretty simple.

Not I. I use TurboTax and have just e-filed my federal and state returns. I used to be a volunteer tax preparer through an IRS/AARP program. I could not believe what preparers charged for a simple return.

Tax preparer? What is that? Do you mean my H & R Block (or more likely, Turbo Tax) downloaded program
for about $39.95?
I am the tax preparer - and admit that my tax situation is quite simple.

Our tax situation is not the most complex in the world, but it's complicated enough that I don't wish to do it myself. The difficulty was that many independent tax advisors are shutting their businesses down, so we had to search for a new CPA.

As this CPA uses a different s/w than the CPAs we used previously, it took me a while longer to get used to organizing our docs the way it was required. Plus, Schwab is very slow about getting the foreign fund results out; it didn't show up until March 2nd this time!

This CPA firm has specific deadlines to get docs submitted, so that was helpful (I'm a procrastinator with taxes, LOL). Tax returns were finished last week and we Docusigned our approvals a week ago, so the returns have been submitted electronically to both Fed/State.

I gave all the info to our tax accountant and told her I was leaving for vacation from 3/26-4/4 so there was no hurry. She called me today to say my return is ready. I was in no hurry because we've had to pay every year, but it seems thanks to the new tax laws with the $6000 deduction we are finally getting a $3000 refund. Hubs didn't work in 2025 and I only received SS so there was no way we would be paying this year. I'm thrilled.

I had an appointment with my bank advisor this week to change the taxes taken out of my pensions and RRIF so that i may not have to pay near as much as I did this year. Some people say that I should be happy that I had the use of that money all year, but with interest being what it is right now it wasn't making any real amount of money for me anyway. I don't much care for big surprises like this year was. Oh Well!!

My tax preparer does everything online. I send her all of the needed documentation to a secure and password protected folder at the beginning of March; she sends me and files my taxes electronically. I have gotten both my state and federal refunds deposited to my bank account within about a week. No mess, no fuss. And not a single sheet of paper!

In Canada, all gambling winnings are Tax FREE, so you get to keep every dollar you win. We also do not have a Gift Tax. JIMB>

You have just described how most Canadians do their tax returns, electronically. JIMB>

Here anything $1,200.00 or more won as a single event is taxed as income. There is no state tax only federal tax on winnings. If that amount is accumulated over several slot machines it isn't. I don't know about taxing table games we never play those. While not perfect putting some of the winning in CD's helps ease the actual loss due to being taxed
