Anybody ever try to find meaningful statistics

Remember when... thirty seemed so old.
I'm in a ranting mood today.
I'm starting to get suspicious of this covid-19 panic.
I wanted to see the Influenza stats. for say... 2018. One has to really dig, because apparently it's not newsworthy, nor does the CDC even bother to keep track. Near as I was able to find, 8% of the population in the US got the flu in 2018. That's 8% of 327 million or about 24 million infected. Of the 24 million, 60,000 died. Now that's a fairly large number of deaths, but, overall it's only .0025% of the population so it didn't result in a nationwide shutdown. Plus, that happens every year. So, what's so different this year?
Everyone knows the flu is spread by coughing and sneezing sending droplets into the air. (sounds familiar doesn't it) By the way, covid id part of the common flu category.
I don't want to hear that lame argument that we don't need to worry because we have a flu vaccine. We don't. If we did, we wouldn't need an annual flu shot now would we.
Now, as more and more people are tested, I believe the numbers will start to show that we will be at or near the same percentage's as the common flu.
I don't want to be accused of wearing a tin foil hat, but, there comes a time when you have to question the motives behind this panic.
Seeing this tweet from of all places, the new york times, I really have to wonder why the need to inflate the number of deaths.
OK, I feel better now. thank you for allowing me to vent. 🙂

I think we share some of the same thinking strategies. When worried, dig, dig & dig deeper.
What I’ve recently discovered is that this strategy doesn’t work. It actually backfires and causes more panic.

One third of the worlds population think this virus was man made in a laboratory but even if it was, what difference does it make to the virus?

Maybe this is a huge publicity scam to cause panic amongst the world about viruses to sell vaccines to everyone. It would be worth billions however viruses mutate like anything else. Would the outdated vaccine work on the newer types?

We can all drive ourselves nuts?
You’ve already got PTSD. You don’t need to do this to yourself. Give your mind a break from all this. Turn off the news, stay off the net for a few days. Listen to music, read a book, watch a good movie, go for a drive with your lovely wife, make an extra delicious bbq with your favourite drink if you have one.

I can relate. It’s think it’s hard not to be bombarded by all of this because its all anyone’s talking about and people are panicking. Some are purchasing bogus treatments and dying from it.

Maybe you could focus on something else for a while. I do however agree with you that for some reason regular ordinary deaths are getting directed towards being corona virus related. Lots of weird stuff that doesn’t make sense. It’s driving me nuts.

What made you decide to care for so many rescue dogs? How many dogs do you have now and how many have you rescued in total?

I guess because so many of them had nobody else. Right now, we're down to 6. 🙂
The question about how many we've rescued is hard to answer. 38 for sure, but I imagine I'm forgetting a few.

Thirty eight!!! Awwww.... ( sniff ) That’s so heart warming. They are very fortunate dogs.
Are suppose you had to downsize as you got older as it must be a lot of work. I know my two are a handful. Between walking them, feeding them ( they eat fresh food daily ), brushing , cleaning, clipping, ... they keep me very occupied.

I have yet to hear any credible evidence that COVID-19 cases or deaths have been over-reported. If anything, those numbers are generally believed to be greatly under-reported by medical and scientific personnel.

If the Chinese government is adding 1200 to its death toll, you can bet your bottom dollar that the true number is far larger.

I understand the "some of them had nobody else" thing. At one point, I had 7 Labrador retriever cross type rescue dogs. They just sort of came to me -- one I found in a road down in Belen, one came to me because his owner was going to just turn her loose, one belonged to a person I knew who just couldn't keep her anymore, and so on. I just couldn't say "no." I never regretted it. Up to the last few years I've always had more than one dog, but now just one. I'll have to sit down and count how many I've had overall. Every one has given back to me in joy and love.

Well, it might not help with flu statistics (haven't checked), but I have checked this site twice over the last several weeks and it was accurate, at least as far as coinciding with the information posted on Ohio.gov.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

Statistics can vary because of differences in reporting, testing, and criteria. I believe they are all to be considered 'estimates' at best. According to several governors, the most vital statistic is the number of new admissions, which makes sense to me.

It will probably take a couple years to have a better grasp of reality. In the meantime, we can worry ourselves sick over the ambiguity - or read sci-fi. (-:
