Anybody on here ever vacationed in tunisia?

We vacationed over there long ago, 1972, when naïve little old me still thought that what we brought along, and took back, was our business only. I had placed my Dad's old revolver (A GUN!) in our checked bag, it proceeded through customs at both ends, was not detected, travelled all around Europe with us, never a need arising to use it in self defense, and returned with us without incident. Only later did I learn of the fallacy of my earlier belief that folks everywhere regarded firearms as just another tool. imp

 In 1985 I travelled across the US, Canada, the UK and parts of Europe with a carving knife and a bread knife in my carry on luggage. Only once were they taken from me while I was on the plane for safe keeping.

No, but I've been next door, Libya, though not on holiday.

One of the two places I've been stoned, literally not dreamily!

No, North Africa's not for me!

Yes, stayed in Monastir in Tunisia. Didn't enjoy life outside the hotel, seemed to be crowds of young and working age men on the streets and in the cafes, staring openly at Western women and whispering.Felt very uncomfortable myself and our two teenage daughters( blonde) felt intimidated by the attention.Street sellers were very persistent and a bit unpleasant.at an historic site, a man asked if he could have my sunglasses ' because he liked them'.Was glad that Mr Oakapple was a tall well built man. have stayed in other countries in the past, Turkey and Egypt, Lebanon etc and they seemed fine.

I never left the US but my son and daughter have both done Europe from England into Russia and south into Spain and Italy and military in Yugoslavia and Iraq for the son and England, Germany, for military into Iraq. Interesting for the daughter the Army gave her a year of concentrated Chinese but then sent her too Iraq.

I do travel but I stay on our continent mostly. I have toured most of Canada on more than one occasion. I have been in all but a couple of the eastern territories.

I have entered and toured Mexico's restricted border areas, I think 3 days max for early stops, otherwise permission for longer stays and to go beyond the limited areas.

Had I traveled earlier I would have loved to do England and much of Europe too. Once the terrorist started to mess with other countries airplanes and buildings I grew real concerned about my self and my wife's health and lives. My kids think I have been a bit too cautious.

Bob, that's typical of the Army, sending your daughter on a course to learn Chinese and then sending her to Iraq!;)

Actually, she was near graduating from the Chinese school when Iraq happened. Suddenly available and no new active assignment so she was really eligible for active duty. Her training and grade accomplishments put her right into certain security assignments needed in Iraq.

But the military does do some rather strange things.

The closest I've been to Tunisia was Morocco and the worst thing that ever happened to me was getting kicked in the knee by a little girl. She said "Bonjour" to me and, being the friendly American that I am, I "Bonjoured" her right back. Then she yells something at me, gives me a flying kick to the knee and runs off.

It was explained to me earlier that she probably thought I was French and there is still a pretty strong dislike of the French there. So after that, whenever anybody greeted me, I said "HOWDY!!!". Never got kicked again.

Oh, yeah. My late husband spoke fluent French but of course the Army sent him to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey for a year to learn Russian. I'm grateful for that because the knowledge of French would have had him sent to Vietnam for sure. As it was, we got sent to Turkey for 2 1/2 years.

I don't think anywhere in the middle east is anywhere I want to go, especially not nowdays. I was quite horrified by the coverage of the June 26 attack -- most of those people killed and wounded were just ordinary people our age (seniors, I mean), just trying to have a nice vacation hanging around on the beach. Boggles the mind. I understand there was another attack there at a museum back in March, also, where tourists were targeted.

It seems that one could find a better place to vacation after the museum attack...
