Anybody on this forum using Linux rather than MS 10?

Many years back I was working with software, good old fashioned DOS products, some Linux products, and of coarse MS took over most all the DOS products and a couple Linux products as well. I lived through the MS generations of confusion with MS and now am at Win 10 for the second, or is it the third year, and more confused than ever. Things that I once had working want help to make them work in the latest Win 10.

So right now I would like to find something more basic, therefore more stable, and go back to trying Linux once again.

So my question of any use of Linux among this crowd.

It is not cost at all as most are rather low cost and some are free.

There was one some years back the was very easy to use and worked without flaws, until MS bought into them. Soon they became expired. Any one remember Xandros. Once part of another groups offerings but now gone forever.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Hello BobF! There are so many Linux distributions these days. You probably already know that. The one I'm experimenting with at the moment and quite liking actually is PCLinuxOS (2017). There are lots and lots though, so you'll have a shopping (researching) good time finding the one that appeals to you the most. My primary computer is an Apple iMac, my wife's PC is a Dell touch screen all in one running MS Win 10. My experimental PC is running PCLinuxOS 64. I'm currently looking to get a more robust system to run it on. Linux, as you already know, is very stable. I'll wish you the best of luck getting back into it and you have a wonderful time, and experience, doing it :). Don...

Thanks for your feed backs. I really loved the Linux experience I had. I have a copy of QCAD now that has a list of my drawings in stalled and they work well. Yesterday I tried to start a new drawing and it said I could not save where the others are, should they try elsewhere? So my note above appeared.

Looking into the QCAD book and it says it will work on many platforms, including Linux. So we give it a try. I have always tried to avoid MS but over the years MS has bought out many very fine competitors and then destroyed them. Word Perfect was at one time the most popular programs but MS caused Word Perfect to end and Corel bought them out. Then Corel needed to sell Xandros (Linux) and eventually MS bought into them and they shut down. It has been a rough time trying to avoid being stuck with MS but I will keep on trying. Anyone remember Flight Simulator? Doing well on itself but MS bought them out and the author started a new company and again MS bought him out, made him an executive and ended that competition. Remember Bruce Artwick?

I'm using Windows 10 and it work well for me.

I had several years of Win 7 and when I converted to Win 10 it started to play with the file system and where I can file things. Something in its structure. My daughter has helped me some and got it going a bit and taught me how to do that. A very confusing, many step operation.

This time I am trying to create a new dwg in a file where I have already created many files. But now Win 10 says I can't do that and wants to change things around. Why? I don't know and it is not just a first time occurrence so I am ready to switch to a Linux operation that I can control the file system and let MS have all the fun it wants with how they do things.

I hope MS never messes with your files. It becomes quite disturbing and I have also lost files in the confusion they create.

I loathe Win 10, so I use Ubuntu 16.04 on this machine. OK, I have kept a dual boot to Win 8 (+classic shell) because I've go some old stuff on it. Ubuntu has some drawbacks and not all software is available for Linux. However, I only use this machine for browsing, eMail and a spot of on-line shopping, so Ubuntu suits me fine.

Thanks so far folks. I see how some are working and likely will go for one of the more popular or select from one of the many specialty driven Linux designs that are so available.

I worked for Bruce Artwick a long, long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

I was there when he went to Redmond to talk with Bill Gates. Gates led Artwick into a massive warehouse that was empty and said that someday it would be packed with product. Artwick said that Gates was either a visionary or crazy (not that they're mutually exclusive :)).

I built Unibug for Bruce-- a debugger whose main module ran in a PC, with a serially attached remote module in the target machine being debugged. (The target machines included the Apple II and the TRS80.) Bruce's software used every nook and cranny of memory, so he needed his debugger on a different machine. The target machine module was a tiny memory read/write thing.

Remember how all the clone PCs used to have Flight Simulator running on the monitor in the ad-- if you could run Flight Simulator you were a good clone.
