who's not averse to answering some questions?

1. Are the symptoms the same for everyone?
2. Does it ever go away?
3. Is it something that can be managed without professional help or is it something that requires it?

Hey Georgia. I have PTSD. I work with others who have it also. The symptoms vary from person to person. Yes it can go away, depending on a variety of factors. Rarely does it disappear without some sort of medical help. If you wish you can pm me and we can discuss this further.

If your really wanting to understand it I would suggest checking out some online PTSD support groups. You can glean a lot more there

My husband suffered from PTSD as a result of the Vietnam war. He struggled unsuccessfully with it and refused professional help because he refused to admit there was anything wrong with him. It turned turned his life into a shambles; he attempted suicide several times, completely alienated his children to the point they refused to be anywhere near him ever, scared the hell out of the whole family and eventually went completely off his rocker.

Butterfly, I'm so sorry your husband refused help for his PTSD, it is clear to see that it turned not only his life into a shambles but your marriage and family life into that too. It didn't have to end that way but sometimes we can't make the best choices when we are suffering with PTSD.

When I was younger something dramatic and evil happened to me and I suffered with PTSD. I got professional help which helped me to be able to recognize what was happening to me and taught me some ways to walk through those times when the symtoms would overwhelm me. I even was on medication for a time. Every once in a while something will trigger a flashback for me even to this day. My faith and God's healing along with the above helped me to overcome PTSD so that I could live a normal life again.

Butterfly, I am so sorry. Severe PTSD if untreated can be a train wreck for all involved. I hope you, and the rest of your family have found peace. Hugs Shali.

It was a complete and total disaster, that's for sure -- did a lot of damage to those around him, too. Funny -- it was dormant (or appeared to be) for a number of years and then something happened that triggered the whole full blown thing.
