Was talking to husband and we are interested in a foreign exchange student program, havent started looking into it too far. Anyone have any experience on this?

My sister was an exchange student and went to France in 1956. Her husband was an exchange student and came to California from Spain in 1957. They fell in love while he was here and married in 1961. In 1965-66,my parents hosted an exchange student from Argentina. She became so much my sister that I named my daughter Linda Marina, after my sister and her. American Field Service was the group that all three exchanges were through-I know at one time they had the best reputation for making the best matches but I have no idea if that`s still the case now.

My family had an exchange student live with us when I was in high school. Edgar was from Brazil and a year older than me. It was a wonderful experience and I visited him the following year, but not as an exchange student.

My mom and my sister both had lots of experience with exchange students over the years. For the most part they were good experiences. You have to be aware that you'd likely be taking in a teenager and all that goes with that. I can tell you that my mom's former "kids" really loved her and have for the most part stayed in touch well after they went home. There are many that she's still in touch with after all these years. My sister has had similar experiences.

Hahahah.... good one Laurie... !!

I know a couple that hosts foreign exchange students. They take them for one year.. They have two young boys of their own and they believe that exposing their kids to someone from another country and culture enriches their children as well as the student's. I haven't gone into the particulars with them.. I don't know how the students are vetted and what it takes to qualify to become a host family. I will ask next time I see them..
