I do like to point out from time to time that society did do some strange things in the past too. Anyone familiar with "baby cages"? Apparently they were used to hang babies from an apartment window so they could get more sun. More info on link after photo for those interested.

My kids had a play pen. I guess that's like a cage. It had toys and their blanky, etc. and I used it when I had to get something done.
They don't use those anymore, but I know there's times my daughter wishes they did.

Playpens are out, but my granddaughter used the folding mesh panels that you can configure into a play area. She always referred to it as "baby jail".

I don't know how I would have raised my daughter without a playpen. She didn't seem to mind it and I actually got to go to the bathroom in peace or put in a load of washing without wondering what she was getting into.

We use those kinds of panels to configure a play area for our toddler grandson when we watch him. His parents do the same, as do most parents of toddlers. Rather than giving our little one the full run of our house we contain him to the family room, dining room and kitchen using those panels and closed doors. That way we can always have eyes on him.

Toddlers move much faster than most of us remember.

Yes, I've seen those cages. Lord have mercy, the mere sight gave me palpitations. I agree that babies need fresh air, but... you mean somewhere in your busy day you couldn't find a little time to take a stroll outside with your baby? No way, in good conscience, could I hang my baby out a window, no matter how someone tried to convince me it was safe.

Confining them indoors is a different story. Even if you have eyes in the back of your head, they need to be corralled, or they're everywhere.
