Anyone for plane spotting ?

Glasgow airport recently saw a large crowd of people with cameras, recorders and notebooks at the ready, eagerly awaiting the arrival of a special aircraft. They didn't care who was on board, they just wanted to add 'Air force 1' to their list of aircraft they had spotted.

I saw Air Force 1 fly over my house once. Whoop de do. I do look up when I hear something different. A couple times a V-22 Osprey flew over. They make a lot of noise. The last time a Goodyear blimp passed by it made no noise at all. I think they may have converted it to electric. I missed that blimp sound.

My house in Illinois had a wetlands nature reserve behind me that was marked as a rest stop for a hot air balloon race. About 12 balloons landed right behind my house. One actually missed his landing spot and ended up covering the 2 story house 2 doors down from us. Can you imagine waking up looking out the window and seeing a deflated balloon on your house?

A few years ago, the North Carolina Air National Guard was "retiring" their fleet of some sort of cargo planes. They had a "retirement flight" of the 11 planes all over North Carolina, flying low in formation and flying over every one of the counties.

That would have been a sight to see.

I love watching the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds as they do their maneuvers. I love airshows. The best one I've ever gone to was at Barksdale AFB when I got to stick my head inside the cockpit of a Stealth Bomber and tour several other planes.

As a kid (and, of course, as a teenager.....at night...wink-wink...), it was always fun to park outside the airport and watch the planes taking off and landing. I haven't actually lost that interest; I still love to watch planes coming and going. When I get to the airport early, I find the best window and watch the planes.

40-ish years ago, we went to the Orlando airport to watch two Concordes land almost simultaneously. We had a good spot at the fence and it was truly a sight to see.
