Anyone have a DEXA (Bone density) scan?

I just had one this morning. For the second time in my life. Basically they are scanning your spine and hips to see how strong they still are. It is a low amount of radiation. I was in and out in 20 minutes. I had my first in 2009 and my doctor said it was time for another. So I went.

Yes Marie. My Mom had osteoporosis so they have been watching me for the last almost twenty years. Have some thinning of my hips, I take calcium daily. I also exercise which is supposed to help also.

I've had two. The first was when my doctor wanted me to go onto HRT and I didn't see the need. The scan was to establish my base level so that I could be monitored. However my level must have been quite high because there was not more talk of bone density for 20 years until I needed a hip replacement. This time the scan was to determine whether my bones were strong enough to hold the implants. They were.

Chalk one up to a liking for dairy products.

I've had one in my late 50s and was told I had osteopenia, since I'm not a fan of xrays, I never had a second one, plus I don't want them to push any prescription drugs on me that may hurt more than help. I also don't take calcium supplements in my old age except what's in my multi and diet. I do believe that excess calcium may cause blocked arteries and strokes. Instead I just increased my magnesium citrate intake and started taking vitamin K2. Also upped my weight bearing exercise to keep my bones strong and try to stretch to keep my joints limber.

Yup, I've had two since the original screening at a Life Line Screening session first documented the problem. My Doctor prescribed over the counter vitamin supplements and the condition has returned to the normal range.

Just got back from a check-up with the doctor, who spent most of the appointment lecturing me on why I need to get Blood Work (to check my Vitamin D levels), a Pneumonia Vaccine, a Dexa Scan, a Well Visit & a multitude of other tests scheduled to make sure I'm completely healthy. If I'm able to get out of bed, read the paper, or an e-book on my new tablet while having my morning coffee, then get on with my day..... that's healthy enough for me!

Yes I had one recently because of lower calcium. I am a borderline case. On the Internet, you can check the numbers
on the report you got. I have never taken vitamins...and I am reluctant to increase my dairy foods...no desire.
My endocrinologist told me not to worry.

Yes, I have had 2 scans and was told to take Fosamax but have heard too many horror stories about that so will be content with the body the good Lord has given me.

I've had a couple. Last one found I have severe osteoporosis all way past the red mark. No meds. That was in 2002.
