Anyone here Ice Skate?

I am contemplating buying a pair of skates so that I can hit the ice (maybe literally) with my granddaughters, this winter.
Last year we took them to a local skate park and my wife and I could just stand on the sidelines watching them.
I went into a local second hand store "Play It Again Sports" but was shocked at the cost of a used pair of skate.
Been keeping my eye on local flyers and see new selling for below the price of used.

I have not skated in over 40 years. o_O

Are there any others here that take their grandkids to a local skate park?

Is there an indoor ice skating rink near you that rents skates? It would probably be helpful if you rented a pair first and tried skating at a rink that has handrails along the edge, so you would know if it is something worth spending a lot of money on for a pair of skates.

This is a great idear, not sure if there are any indoor rinks in my area.
I will have to do some googling to find out.

Thanks

This 100%, since you have not skated in 40+ years.
No sense buying skates when you don't know it you still have the ability to skate.

I recently stopped ice skating and gave my skates to my granddaughter.

I skate in the winter months. It’s fun! I think Honeynuts suggestion to rent skates is a good one. No sense spending money on something you don’t particularly like.
I can't say right now, that I would not like it. Like I said it has been decades since I last laced up a pair of skates.

I would like to think I'd have fun out there with the little ones.
I know this past summer, I went bike riding with them and it was the same thing, I hadn't been on my bike in years. had to dust it off and do a little maintenance on it first. I had a blast out there with them.

I just answered your question whether we’ve been skating or not. I have gone skating with my husband. It was fun.

Ice skating is quite different than bicycle riding though.
Falling on the ice is a definite possibility. Can your joints deal with that?

You WILL have to be quick on your feet to avoid the less experienced skaters AND the hotshots who will cut you off.
These "Others" are why I hung up my skates.
I wiped out the first time I went out. I tripped on my own picks. I had on women’s ice skates. I bit my bottom lip and it was bleeding and my knees in my leggings got holes in them. Skin was missing. For days later my knees changed colours. Falling when you’re young is very different than falling when you’re older. Good point Lady in PA.

I haven't been ice skating in over 35 years.. the last time was with my daughter when she was a little girl.....

Our local garden centre has an ice rink some years at Christmas.. and I'm often tempted to just go on for old times sake and use a Pusher to keep me stable... but I haven't mustered the courage yet... so I just watch from the sidelines

More than just good exercise, it can be entertaining. All fit healthy seniors still capable of moving should find ways to continue to do so because USE IT OR LOSE IT is a physical reality.

Not something I have ever done because our coastal marine climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is never cold enough for open water to freeze. But I do ski Tahoe snow resorts each winter that has even greater potential for visceral movement enjoyments. And down here where it is not cold, I often freestyle dance with a 3-dimensional dynamic style that is very similar to ice skating movements minus the jumps.
