Anyone taking care of a sick pet ?

We have an emergency small animal clinic but it’s an hour away. Some years back we drove one kitty there on a Sunday. He was 14 with cancer and the extreme pain came quickly, even with the meds. They PTS’d him and we brought him home to join his friends already over the rainbow bridge. The Admiral was my last kitty.

Since then, the all animal clinic in my county has very much improved their 24 hour emergency service. When you have horses too sick to get on the trailer, the vet has to come to you.

i am also able to keep some mild pain meds on hand. Some of these cross over between dogs and horse but are under different names and the dosage changes for each creature. If I am in question , I can at least call the vet on call from my clinic for up front help.

It might be helpful for many folks to inquire as to whether there’s a 24 hour small creature emergency available. E
prepared for it to be very expensive.
There is a MedVet emergency hospital for cats and dogs and I'm not sure what other pets they see. They're open 24 hours and not real far from me. There's also another emergency animal hospital not far either but their hours are 8:pm to 1 am.

I have a cat with epilepsy. He is also a very anxious and scared cat, which brings on the seizures.
His seizures have been under control for a few years now. Fingers crossed…
I'm glad his seizures have been under control. I also know how stressful it is when their illness is not under control. I hope he continues to do well with you!❤️

Amy is a Maltese with heart failure. In addition to her heart medication she’s now on a lasix. I have to get up at 4Am for her medication and then be home by 4PM. Her medication has to be strictly timed around her meals or it won’t work.

I think her time is limited and she just turned 11. I have 9 urns in my closet. I’m sorry you are going through this Ruthanne.

Hi TT, thank you. I know you understand how it is, you're going through a rough time too caring for Amy. All we can do is enjoy our last times with them. At least that's where I'm at. I'm sorry you are going through this 💓

Kitty, my female cat was about 14, when she just stopped eating. The vet couldn't find any reason why she wasn't eating. I spent a fortune on lab tests and x-rays. She just refused to eat. She was getting shots and pills to increase her appetite, but she wouldn't open her mouth. The only thing was for exploratory surgery, but she was 14, and extremely weak- she wouldn't survive the surgery. And the vet didn't think there was any blockage problem.- It was tough watching her waste away. Putting her in the carrier for the last time really hurt.

I'm so sorry! I know the pain of them having something wrong. And then losing them.

Over the years we have loved and lost a few cats and a couple of dogs. We have taken the best care we could along with the vet visits. We were a long time (a few years) with no dear friend. Now we have Lily, a calico kitty, she is about 2&1/2 to 3 years old. She was very thin when we first got her, now I tease her about being fat, but she is just very sturdy looking. The vet says she is a nice healthy kitty, and we are happy with that.

Just got the news that my cat (16 years old) has kidney failure. I am going to take care of her, love her until the very end. Pets do so much for us and when the time comes, it's our turn. I am going to make the most of our time left together.
I'm sorry you got that diagnosis. I'm doing the same as you.

When you have a sick child, you can go the medicine cabinet and get aspirin or whatever to help ease their pain. Not so with pets. They have to suffer until you can get to a vet, not always easy to get an appointment. It would help for someone to come up with a first-aid kit for poorly pets.

There are several first aid kits for pets available , eg

Pet First Aid Kit | Dog First Aid | PawAid

Or Amazon ( sorry such a long link)

Really sorry for all of you dealing with this now.
I’ve done it many times for all the dogs who’ve owned me over the years, it’s so hard to have to say goodbye.
