Anyone taking Water Pills having Kidney Problems?

I have CHF, overweight, asthma, diabetic, too name a few of my issues. I am on so many meds that it prints two pages when they want me to look and make sure that my meds are correct at the doctors office. My diet is low sodium, low carb, and sugar-free which I watch very close. I am going to a Bariatric Weight loss clinic, but not sure if they can help me because I have had previous stomach surgery. So that is the background for my problem.

For the last 6 months, I have been dealing with this diet and keep yo-yoing between 5 lbs. The water weight is just not moving and neither is the other weight. Now I have developed a kidney problem and they have to cut back on the water pill because I am dehydrating my kidneys. So now I will be gaining more water weight. I am in this vicious cycle and can't find a way out. I'm not able to do much exercise due to Arachnoiditis in my lower back. It's a rare condition that twists the nerve endings in my low back and blocks the spinal fluid from going to my legs.

I'm really having a pity party this morning and needed to get this out there to see if anyone else is dealing with any of this. I feel pretty down and alone this morning.......

I am going to go to my PCP tomorrow, my heart doc on Tues, weight loss clinic on Wed, and stomach doc on Friday, 4/12 and all of my doctors are 1.5 hours away from me. Ok, I'm done. Anyone have any words of advice???

No advice just a hug❣️

It gets to be a tricky balance when you have a lot of different issues. If I was in your shoes I’d make sure all my drs know all my problems and restrictions and then go from there.

Good luck!

Craftynana,

I, also, have a plethora, of medical problems. I am diabetic. I have stage 1 heart failure, along with AFIB, bradycardia, and SVT. I put on fluid from the heart issues. I have one kidney, the other failed and was removed. My one kidney is in stage 3 kidney failure and it is getting worst. I take a "water type pill" for my high blood pressure.

Somedays I have to take a diuretic because I have too much fluid. I too end up dehydrated. Sometimes severly dehydrated. I also am short for my weight. I need one of those medieval stretching machines to increase my height. Then I wouldn't be overweight. Are we related? Lol.

Seriously, CeeCee is right, it's a total balancing act. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, doctors are often stumped as to what to do with complicated patients. I have pity parties as well. It's so terribly sad, ice cream is no longer invited. Here's a hug from me as well. Hang in there.

Just hang in there, God loves you.

Speaking observation only but just some light exercise and/or movement on a regular basis through out the day might help. And believe it or not try drinking more water. Some of the retention might be there isn't enough water for the kidneys to produce enough urine. Also dehydration for anyone could cause extra salt retention. Had a nurse say water pills are just as much about getting the body to get rid of salt with that water. Also too much salt retention could be a sodium-potassium imbalance. Too much fluid loss depletes potassium. Too much potassium can hurt kidneys among other things. It's a fine balance.

Good Luck. Seek continuous advice and monitoring until progress is made.

Hang in there.

Sorry about the late reply, Doctor visits and just plain no time. You sound like you could understand what I am going through. I don't want to get to that place with my kidneys (just like I'm sure you didn't choose it either). I take them every day. If I don't then my legs and feet swell up and I have trouble breathing.

Sounds like you and I could be related..lol I am going to a weight loss clinic that does bariatric surgery and they are talking with a doctor about doing that. In order to lose this weight, these parts of me need to function better and in order to use these parts I need to weigh less. It's been a vicious cycle which I haven't been able to win so far. But I will in one way or another.

No ice cream is no longer invited, but have you tried the tofu ice cream...yum. You will need to find the right brand for your taste, but when you find it, it is no different than regular ice cream, except, lots healthier, less calories, more protein, just a little more expensive in my area. No you still can't overindulge in it...lol I have so many doctors, and they all are stumped by me. On top of all my ailments, my body reacts in the opposite way with some of the drugs on the market and it takes a while to find the right drug to use. Thanks for the hug...it sure helps!!

Please ask your doctor about taking those diuretics in the same way you asked us, Crafty Nana!

Hope you feel better:)

Thank you, RadishRose, my doctor is very aware of my situation. He gets phone calls from me about this all the time. The doctor has me weighing myself every day in order to keep an eye on my water gain. If I gain more than 3 lbs a day (yes it happens), or 5 lbs a week, I need to take this special pill to get the water out. I also need to call them and let them know.

The only thing I can add and most in the U.S. don't go where I've gone. I started learning about nutritional supplements about 25 yrs ago, just about post menopause. I had some bad experiences with a pharma drug and then the pharma hip replacement, so for me that was enough BURN.

I see only integrative MD's now since I found them about 20 yrs ago.

Is it too late, for OP to make drastic changes, I can't say. I'm 81 soon and love love love my nutritional supplements and for the last 10 yrs I've elminated all breads in my house and all the sugary junk I lived on for too many years.

OP could consider naturopathic MD's and/or integrative functional MD's. They are out there.

No one can feel what others go thru and I'm glad I've chosen my path decades ago but if I had the will to make some changes now, if not too late, I'd start with the MD's I mentioned above and pick probably 2 of the worst issues you deal with and go from there.

My daughter who is now 55 trusted in pharma drugs and the MDs for years and ended up in ICU at one venture and then in a long rehab for their pain pill addiction...

She now won't touch a pharma drug and has changed her life around with nutritional supplements and her children both young adults are the same, they saw what their mother went thru.

It's never too late to make yourself better, and I truly believe in nutritional supplements and have cut bread and most sugar out due to diabetes. Unfortunately, supplements are too expensive, and take to long to take effect for the issues I am having. Having only the 2 disability incomes for the month, the money doesn't go far.

I live in a very remote area and the doctors/nutritionists/etc all are about an hour away. We don't have very many of these special doctors in my area, and the ones that are closest are not the most qualified. I went to one naturalist doctor and the most I got from them was to shop at a different store. They seemed to want me to tell them what I needed. If I knew what I needed, I wouldn't need them...lol

What I need is a doctor that will listen and have the patience to work through these things with me. Instead I get doctors that just throw another pill at me and tell me to "try this". There are too many doctors (specialists) that I see. I need to find one doctor that will take care of me from top to bottom so that they know what is going on all over my body instead of just one part. I need to take my office visit note with me everywhere cause the doctors are not all in the same system so can't see each others notes.

I'm so happy that your daughter found a way to help herself before anything else happens to her system. I just got off of all my narcotics and steroids since I knew that they were the worst. Yep I hurt, but I don't have central sleep apnea anymore caused by the narcotics... I have a whole list of meds and I am slowly making that list smaller. I wish I could get my daughter to go more natural for her colon cancer. She is just ending her chemo and there are so many things that she could be taking to help her through this, but has all the faith in her doctors that they are giving her what she needs. I finally had to give up trying to help. She is doing great...hasn't missed hardly any work...but I know that she could feel better.

Craftynana, I'm sorry you're not feeling well, but please try to keep your spirits up. I hope your healthy improves steadily and gives you more positive hope. I like to use more natural alternatives for health problems, so I'm thinking that Parsley and Dandelion can help with edema. They might have a lesser effect on your kidneys, I don't know. Of course, with your medical issues and medicines, you have to definitely consult with your doctor before using even natural treatments for any of your conditions. More info HERE.

3. Eat (or Drink) Parsley

Parsley can be used as a natural diuretic that helps to relieve water retention and bloating. It does this by stimulating the production of urine by the kidneys and it draws out excess water that can cause peripheral edema. (14)

One of the best ways to use parsley as a natural and safe diuretic is to make parsley tea. You can do this by adding a quarter cup of chopped parsley to one cup of boiling water. Let the tea steep for about 5 minutes. Strain the parsley leaves and add a teaspoon of honey.

You can drink parsley tea twice a day or when you notice symptoms of water retention. Keep in mind that women who are pregnant should not consume parsley tea because it’s a very powerful herb that may cause complications. To treat mild edema, add parsley to soups, salads or even juices.

4. Drink Dandelion Tea

Dandelion root serves as a natural diuretic. It allows your liver to eliminate toxins that can be causing inflammation. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that when fresh leaf dandelion extract was ingested by volunteers, it caused a significant increase in the frequency of urination in the five-hour period after the first and second dose.

Researchers concluded that dandelion shows promise as an effective and natural diuretic for humans. (15)

To use dandelion as a diuretic to treat less severe cases of peripheral edema, you can buy dandelion tea at your local health food store. Or you can make your own. To make dandelion tea, simply steep the root or flowers for 30 minutes in boiling water. Then strain the dandelion and it’s ready to drink. Start by drinking a small amount to make sure that you don’t experience any adverse reactions.

I put a lot of blame on MD's and medical schools for pushing so many toxic drugs on the people. My daughter got so messed up as the MD she was seeing --- a troubled marriage was a big problem -- and so she kept taking the stinkin drugs and kept getting worse and worse. She went thru HAIL for a few years on those drugs and then a long rehab.

OP: I have a couple good info links on a lot of alternatives for cancers and if want them to share with daughter I'll post them, otherwise I won't bother.

Right now we have a friend on another group who is battling her cancer with alternatives and so far so good, she does not want the toxins added to her body. She's being very brave and I hope she wins the battle.

When I got on Grape Seed Ex back in 1995, we were told MAY prevent cancers.....

From my point of view, our whole U.S. medical system is bassackwards....drugs can save lives, that is true but not the way they are dowled out today.

thank you for those teas I will definitely talk to my doctor tomorrow about using them. I'm not giving up hope. there's a lot of life ahead and I'm not going to live it in this condition. I know that I can fight this and beat it so I will let you know definitely when I get more information and how is this is going to work for me. Thank you for this information I'm definitely going to talk to the doctor about it.

Craftynana, I was prescribed Amlodipine which is a Calcium channel blocker. It can be used when diuretics cause problems (and vice versa). I only found out about diuretics when I had a very painful episode of gout in my right wrist, but my GP had no hesitation in changing my meds. My kidney function had become reduced because my hypertension had not been adequately treated, but my new GP changed my meds and my BP is good and kidney function (which falls off naturally with age) has remained stable for over 12 years.
