Anyone using a tankless water heating system?

One of our daughters/Son-in-laws have two of these in their house, and they seem to work quite well. Theirs are powered by natural gas, and heat the water quickly with a minimum waste of gas. They had them installed when they built the house about 8 years ago, so there was minimal expense in getting them installed. I have heard that installing such systems in already finished houses can be quite expensive and require some major construction issues....with the gas piping or electric wiring (220V) and controls, etc.

These things have been around for many years....I remember when I was in Germany in the early 60's, my wife's parents over there had one of these units in their apartment.

Well we don't have gas but 220 is only eight feet away from current HW tank. I am not ready but I will consider it when I am. Just mainly curious now.

I has one in the house I built in the Ozarks. It ran on propane (no natural gas in the boon docks). It worked very well and would have worked even better if had been on the same level (closer to the sink and bathtub) as it was I had to install it in the basement. As it was it took no longer to wash your hands with warm water than if I had a tank full of hot water in the basement.

We've had a tankless AquaStar (made in France) water heater for around 20 years now. That was a popular brand when we bought it. We're very happy with it, live in a small ranch house, 2 bedroom and finished basement, and it's served us well over the years. If we had to replace it someday, it would be with another tankless heater. It's gas. Sometimes the water temperature can fluctuate and gets a bit too hot, but my husband makes any necessary adjustments and basically cleans and services it himself. It's really been pretty care-free. Nice to never run out of hot water, even when we have company and numerous people taking showers, doing laundry, etc.

Nice to hear you had a good experience with your system SeaBreeze. I remember reading about something like that once and thought it was a great idea. I wonder why society hasn't switched to those sorts of things more?
