Anyone watching the Oscars tonight?

At one time I loved to watch, like 20 years ago. Now it is just a bunch of over-entitled people patting themselves on the back.

I used to love to see the pretty dresses, etc. Now it just seems old and tacky.

So, no, not watching. I haven't seen any of the films nominated, either. No three hour movie marathons for me.

Wow, I’m the only one? That’s interesting.

Several of the actors were advocating for families to return to the movie theaters instead of streaming everything because we are losing that historical social experience. I guess your reactions confirm the loss of interest in the film industry as a whole.

They honored the firefighters and first responders of the California Palisades fires, which was nice. The firefighters gathered on the stage.

The films were quite diverse as well. Some thought provoking issues addressed. I haven’t seen most of them yet but I’d like to see them one day. I wanted to see a few of them at the theater but they weren’t showing in my town.

It's interesting that so many say they are out of touch with modern entertainment. I wonder why that is? Could it be because the quality has deteriorated? A good story, good script and actors that fit their parts used to be the norm. These days, it seems to be about making a statement, and no film is worth watching unless it features nudity and sex. What does this say about modern society?
I stopped watching the Oscars a long time ago. It has become tacky and pointless.

The simple answer is, we're not their target audience anymore.

The main reason, I think, that most of us don't keep up with what's going on in the entertainment industry, is because we don't relate to it anymore.

The best movies and the best music, to us, occurred while we were in our prime. And those movies, and that music, to us, is still the best. That's what every generation thinks.

Just like these 20 and 30 somethings now, who spend their money on movies they think are great, and well done, we did the exact same thing when we were that age.

It's like when people say Saturday Night Live 'hasn't been funny for 30 years'.

Yea, ok, a more accurate statement would be SNL hasn't been funny to me for 30 years.

They've been on the air for 50 years. Know why? Because their target audience has not changed. We have.

I saw three of the movies that were nominated... A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, and Conclave. Out of the three, I'd pick Conclave for best picture.

A Complete Unknown was really just a Bob Dylan impersonator with supporting actors. There was no depth to the character or the acting.

The Brutalist was good, but somewhat flawed. The cinematography was pretty good.

Conclave had an interesting story, great acting, and was just an engrossing movie... to me, anyway.

I haven't seen Anora, and it doesn't look like the kind of movie I'd ever want to watch, but that was the winner.

I have never missed the Academy Awards.
Even though I have only seen 2 movies that were noninated this year, I still enjoyed watching.
I love to see all of the beautiful gowns and actors and actresses. I like the entertainment.
My daughter loves it too and this year, we watched at her new home and I spent the night. That made it even more fun! ( although I woke up at 3 am and can’t go back to sleep)
I’m writing this from bed! Lol
I love that many of the men have been wearing brooches on the lapels of their tuxedos recently. It looks lovely!

Well said!!

I usually go to the movies on Tuesdays, when the theaters charge less in my area. I love movies, and I saw most of the nominees this year. I was surprised and happy about Anora's big wins. It was a good film, but not your usual Oscar type winner. I thought for sure The Brutalist would be the big winner. I loved the shout-outs to "the sex worker community." Also loved Mikey Madison in the movie and her acceptance speech. But I would have preferred to see Demi Moore finally get her due.

This was the 1st time in yrs, I watched most of the show, wanted to see how well Conan O'Brien did as 1st time host, thought he was funny. The other was to see Morgan Freeman heartfelt tribute to his friend/my favorite movie actor Gene Hackman. After that I went to bed

Excellent point about target audiences, and I think you hit the nail on the head -- with one caveat.

I have NEVER "related" to the entertainment industry. If we're talking about films, I'm the kind of guy who might go to a movie (well, not anymore due to hearing loss) and enjoy it, but not give two twits about the actors, the script, the storyboarding, or who was shacking up with whom in someone else's trailer.

I watch the film, enjoy it (hopefully) and then forget about it. The film did its job -- it entertained me.

For a while.
