Anyone watching the Oscars tonight?

Last year (2024) about 19.5 million folks tuned in to watch the Oscars, which was a modest increase from 2023. One "expert" thinks this year viewership will be down to approx 15 million. To put that in perspective, about 127 million watched the Super Bowl this year.

But those who love it, still love it.

Hollyweird has lost a lot of meaning to younger people as well, it isn't about people getting old. Part of it might be pandering to global audiences, daring domestic viewers to look elsewhere while laughing at them. Part of it might be casting that doesn't look like America to most people. Part of it might be toxic activist messaging that takes cynical potshots at large swathes of people. Elitism is an ugly look.

Excellent point about target audiences, and I think you hit the nail on the head -- with one caveat.

I have NEVER "related" to the entertainment industry. If we're talking about films, I'm the kind of guy who might go to a movie (well, not anymore due to hearing loss) and enjoy it, but not give two twits about the actors, the script, the storyboarding, or who was shacking up with whom in someone else's trailer.

I watch the film, enjoy it (hopefully) and then forget about it. The film did its job -- it entertained me.

For a while.
Some day — probably in the not too distant future — they're going to have subtitles displayed on the screen in the theaters. Some theaters are experimenting with different technologies used for providing subtitles, but they're less than ideal, but if it means increasing their bottom line, they'll find a way!

It's interesting that so many say they are out of touch with modern entertainment. I wonder why that is? Could it be because the quality has deteriorated? A good story, good script and actors that fit their parts used to be the norm. These days, it seems to be about making a statement, and no film is worth watching unless it features nudity and sex. What does this say about modern society?
I stopped watching the Oscars a long time ago. It has become tacky and pointless.
Many of us don’t relate to the Oscars due to the astronomical selection we have now of moves to eat. We can watch whatever we want, when we want. We might have to wait newer movies but we can sit in the comfort of our own home.

Going to out to theatres with a possible hundred other people around you just to see a block buster movies is a thing of the past. Sure you can still do it but most would rather wait until they can sit comfortably in the own home.

I used to like watching who was wearing what but nowI don’t really care that much. Like someone else said, you can watch a shorter summary of the events after it’s been broadcast if you want to.

Seems to me the whole Oscar ostentatious presentations are more of a show off for those involved in celebrity, actors, writers, clothing designers, directors and T V stations--to grab viewers....... (Imo, it's a freak show. :) )
