Apparently yesterday wasn't really a first.

Speeding carriages! One wonders what that officer of earlier times might have thought to see the blatant vehicular speeding of today. It’s so pervasive that enforcement is almost nil.

Grant was reportedly a hard-drinking, hard-living man. At least he was an effective general, and knew that he wasn’t above the law, fessing’ up when necessary. That’s better than some do…

He was arrested but was he actually charged with a criminal offense? Or did was he let go without formally being charged?
Good question and I'm not sure, here is what CBS says:

Grant was taken into custody after he was caught racing his buggy on M Street.

"They ended up letting him pay a fine and walk back to the White House,"

There are some who claim a sitting president can't be indicted, and a former president can't be indicted... So once a president is elected, he or she is above the law and can do whatever the hell he or she wants without fear of consequences.

I seriously doubt that's what our Founding Fathers would have wanted.

Yesterdays TV news was totally consumed with this "indictment". It's a shame that we can't pick better people to lead our nation. I still remember some of the "hoopla" that Nixon caused....and about the only President I maintain a positive memory of might be Eisenhower.

I'd have to say "He's not "above" the law" but until he's not in office, all criminal charges may not be brought to bear.

It's just that it would have to wait, but he still can be prosecuted for said crimes.

Eisenhower had good domestic policies, but his foreign policies were atrocious. One of the biggies was the 1953 Iranian coup.

If Grant was speeding in a carriage and probably using a whip to spur his horses on, would the arresting officer have thought him to be a whipper-snapper? I guess this beats being a young speed merchant… 🤣

:
While I agree with the no politics rule here, and almost feel we should be allowed to discuss this....I feel it would be too much of a hot button topic here. I am kind of torn between allowing us to chat about it...and fear that too much argument would ensue.

That being said, I just have to say "Holy :poop:"
