Apple Cider Vinegar - Super Juice?

Years ago my brother-in-law, whom was living with us at the time, purchased a book on New England home remedies. I can't recall the title only that it was about old time home remedies from natural resources. If I recall it was mainly about the benefits of 'Apple Cider Vinegar' (ACV) and honey (organic or local ????). Anyway I've heard and read about the use of ACV for many maladies. I usually try to research prescribed drugs and supplements for dangerous side effects. I haven't been able to cite many dangers with ACV other than the results of acidity and potential damage to the enamel on your teeth if you don't rinse out after drinking it.

My daughter is a supplemental advocate and she is now into drinking ACV and using coconut oil for cooking, external applications and such. I was wondering if any have been using either and have you had positive results? I just started drinking ACV myself because of stenosis of the spinal column. I had a co-worker tell me years ago that pure apple juice will disolve calcium deposits in your joints, don't know how true. I researched ACV for that use and it seemed positive, but OMG ACV is the miracle concoction of the century for every aliment from toe fungus to dementia. I figured it can't hurt after looking for any dire side effects. It's been claimed that it helps with blood sugar, blood pressure, circulation and many other ailments.

It's been used for centuries, Plato was said to have taken it for everything. Your thoughts would be welcome.

I have never heard this about ACV. I'd like to now look into this further!

This also reminded me of the benefits of drinking pickle juice!
[h=2]1. Hangover Cure:[/h]One of the main reasons people feel so terrible when they’ve spent a night drinking is because alcohol is a diuretic, leaving you feeling dehydrated. Drinking pickle juice helps to replenish your depleted sodium levels.
[h=2]2. Post-Workout Cure:[/h]Many athletes swear by it because it helps to rebuild electrolytes post-workout. Pickle juice contains sodium and vinegar — both necessary in aiding athletes and those who sweat heavily. Some researchers also credit vinegar to help relieve the cramps; others say it’s the magnesium. This might also be useful pre-workout, too. The National Institutes of Health found that ingesting high-sodium drinks pre-exercise can improve thermoregulation and performance.
[h=2]3. PMS Remedy:[/h]It works the same way as it would for a post-workout cure because it helps to hydrate the body and alleviate cramping. It also will help to curb the salt cravings that many women have when they are menstruating.
[h=2]4. Heartburn Relief:[/h]This might sound like it would cause the exact opposite effect, since vinegar triggers heartburn for some, but the vinegar in pickle juice actually helps some people soothe heartburn, according toYahoo Shine.

I test my glucose 4 X daily, I have been consuming 1 tsp ACV in 8 oz of water 3 X daily for the last 5 days. My GLU count has only been over 100 once in the last 4 days, it was 101 @ 6 AM (I am on insulin SA and LA plus Metformin). My BP Systolic has dropped into the 120's and my diastolic hasn't been above 78 ( I am on BP medication ) during the same time frame. I have lost more weight after starting a low carb diet than I care to mention since July 24th. I will be having an A1C test on the 24th of Oct, it was 12 in July needs to be 5-6% or lower. Hopefully my ALT/AST counts will be lower (high indicates a fatty liver). My cholesterol while not dangerously high @ 150 hopefully will be lower. That's 5 more reasons I have started drinking it. I was on the right track but starting ACV will hopefully accelerate the lower counts. A near death experience motivates one.

Attached is an image of my Glucose tests for the last 15 days. I started ACV on the 9th @ approx 10 AM. The image shows the first 8 days on the left and from the 9th to today on the right. I haven't changed my diet or injection dosage. I test 4 times a day.

One of the uses for ACV that I've found to be quite effective, is for Age Spots. I spend a lot of time outdoors, and if I forget to put some good sun lotion on my hands and arms, I quickly develop dark spots. When that happens, I apply a mix of 1/3rd ACV, 1/3rd olive oil, and 1/3rd water. I keep a small bottle of this mix on my workbench, and some q-tips handy. I shake the bottle a bit, to even the mix, then quickly apply some to the spots, before the mixture begins to separate....and within a day or two, the skin tone is even again. This formula works as well for me as anything I've tried from the stores....and for pennies on the dollar.

UPDATE: 2 weeks since starting apple cider vinegar (ACV) my postprandial glucose count @ 2 hours hasn't been above 112. American Diabetic Assoc's suggested upper limit is 180. My daily preprandial counts have averaged 97-98 with a high of 102 once, normal range is 130/80. Pre-diabetic is diagnosed as anything over 100 average with 130 being the upper limit before you are diagnosed as diabetic requiring medication or lifestyle change. I take pills and injections but only the original prescribed doses of both short acting and long term. I haven't needed to adjust dosage up or down since my release from the hospital.

My weight is still going down and my medicated blood pressure has leveled out at less than 120/80 (testing @ 9 AM/9 PM). I have included the following in my daily regimen: 1 tsp cinnamon with my morning oatmeal (rolled & steel cut), 2 Tbls of almond butter, 1 Tbls ground flaxseed & water. I mix 2 tsp of ACV with 8 oz of water 15 min prior to my lunch & dinner, then again at bedtime, total daily dosage is 2 Tbls. I allow myself 1500 cal and less than 120 carbs daily for meals. I can't say whether it's my weight loss, my natural remedies, the prescriptions or the inclusion of ACV. But something is working. I have an appointment with my PC doctor on the 27th and will discuss the possibility of lowering my injection doses. ACV is like 2 cents a tsp, daily cost 16 cents versus 3 doses of short acting at $1.25 per dose, daily $3.75 X 30 = $112.50 vs $4.80 monthly. Medicare takes care of the oral medications ($.00 copay) I might be able to go on a lower dose of diabetic pills hopefully.

The health benefits of ACV is varied beyond glucose levels and doesn't have harmful side effects if you discount the damage to your teeth enamel if you don't rinse after taking it or the possibility of burning your mouth or esophagus by taking it straight.

There is no doubt in my mind that ACV has beneficial effect, or perhaps, promotes some internal process which provides the benefit. I say this in such fashion, because the make-up of the human body is such that blood Ph, the measure of it's acidity or alkalinity, must remain confined within a very narrow range, 7.35 to 7.45, which is very slightly alkaline. Ph 7.0 is neutral. Below that number is acid, above it alkaline.

A condition of blood Ph anywhere near that of 5% vinegar, acetic acid, can cause death very quickly. Here's a couple of Ph values of things often consumed: lemon juice Ph 2.0; citrus fruit juice, 3.0; tomato juice 4.0. Stomach acid is around 2.0. So, obviously, parts of the body live with the presence of acid, but within the general circulatory system, the blood must be held at 7.4. How it is regulated by the body's biological processes remains a mystery, to me.

One interesting note about vinegar is that alcohol in the blood is removed during it's passage through the liver, the alcohol being converted to vinegar, believe it or not. What becomes of that vinegar, considering it's very low Ph, which would pose danger if left in the bloodstream, I have not come up with yet.

Vinegar, acetic acid, reacts with alkaline compounds to form acetates, which I presume is the process by which the vinegar ingested is removed from the system before it can raise blood Ph.

Whew! imp

UPDATE: 01/09/2016 My 75 YO male neighbor was outside blowing leaves, I hadn't talked with him since Thanksgiving. I remember him telling me he had a Dr's appointment on the 21st of December. He had been traveling to his relatives during most of Dec. He voiced his concerns to me about his upcoming visit & tests. He had started drinking 3 Tbsp 'apple cider vinegar' two weeks after I started in Oct. I asked how the tests went, he told me that his doctor was amazed with his CBC results including A1C. He had been diagnosed as 'pre-diabetic' earlier. He told the Dr he had been drinking ACV. The Dr said, 'Well whatever you're doing keep doing it, your results were perfect'. I asked what his A1C results but he couldn't remember because the Dr was quoting so many numbers he was confused. His next appointment was scheduled for Jun and the only thing the Dr wanted was to see a 10 lb weight loss.

WARNING:
later we visited with my wife's friend & I asked her if she was still taking ACV. She said her Dr warned her that ACV reacts unfavorably with iron (she has been on iron supplements for iron deficient anemia for a couple of years, so it's not for everyone).
