..to life without parole... for the father & son

Three white men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced Friday to life in prison, with a judge denying any chance of parole for the father and son who armed themselves and initiated the deadly pursuit of the 25-year-old Black man.

Greg and Travis McMichael grabbed guns and chased Arbery in a pickup truck after spotting him running in their neighborhood outside the Georgia port city of Brunswick. Neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan joined the pursuit and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael blasting Arbery with a shotgun.

In November, a jury convicted all three defendants of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and attempted false imprisonment.

Murder carries a mandatory life sentence under Georgia law. The trial judge ordered both McMichaels to serve life without parole. Bryan was granted a chance of parole, but must first serve at least 30 years in prison.

The Feb. 23, 2020, killing became part of a larger national reckoning on racial injustice when the video was posted online two months later.

I just can't get my head around the fact that they all wasted their own lives.. completely destroyed their lives for the thrill of the chase of a young innocent man, entirely due to the colour of his skin....:cautious:

Unbelievable, how deep the hatred of racism goes.

It's just so shocking to me, that this father was quite happy to lead his son into such hatred, that he must have known would lead them eventually into a prison sentence.. if not a life sentence one day, but certainly hatred so deep that they would at some point be arrested for something..., and now both of them will never touch another leaf, another blade of grass..

I really don't understand it, it's just beyond my ken ... but I'm pleased the courts saw fit to ensure they can never do it another person

Very pleased that justice was served in this modern day lynching. The judge was fair and did a good job. Rest peacefully Mr. Arbery, sympathy to your family.

Yep, that's something that never seems to change in the United States. You would think in 2022 people would accept each other and ditch the hate, but guess not. :( It's a good thing though when these killers are held accountable, that's got to help. For so many years they got away with it, before video recordings on smart phones and body cameras.

@hollydolly it's easier to understand if you can grasp the concept that these men felt their white privilege deeply, felt themselves beyond any reprisals for this act due to their own racism. They felt JUSTIFIED in hunting Mr. Arbery down because how DARE he, a black man, be in their neighborhood. The fact that he was there HAD to mean that he was up to no good, and so they were going to make damn sure he didn't get to carry out whatever nefarious act he must have been planning on, else why would he be there in the first place?

Their white privilege allowed them to receive advantages, benefits, and rights that they never had to earn throughout their lives. They were born with them simply because of the color of their skin. Add to that their various biases that helped form their racism, and of course it can't help but lead to ascribing negative attributes to people of color the outcome of which is a sense of being superior to or more powerful than people of color. It can also, as is obvious in the case of these men, lead them to believe that they will not be held accountable for any action they take against a black person because their bias of "everybody knows black people are more likely to commit crime or be dangerous" will be their defense.

It's sick, and horrid, and wretched. And I'm glad they're going to be in jail for the rest of their lives.

this portion of your statement crosses my mind in many many crimes ......how throwing away their future is worth most any crime......
let alone this type of hate.
If they actually thought they'd be throwing away their future, if they considered that it was even a possibility, they likely wouldn't have committed such a heinous act.

Either that or they were so intensely focused on that moment, their hatred, their outrage, that there was simply no room for the contemplation of future consequences for their actions.

I think as in this case, their strong drive and inbred racism overcomes their sensibility in thinking of any future consequences. As @Pepper said, their neighbors are usually just like them and would back them up and cover for them in any killing of a person of color.....so they take their chances. If they got away with the murder, they'd have a $hit eatin' grin on their faces the rest of their lives and great stories to tell their friends and family for years to come.

The same with crooked Cops. Before the Courts steadily recognized a 1st AM right to video/audio police by the public, it was the days of Wild Bill Hiccup.

Very well said. You summed it up nicely. 👍

Don't forget after the Antonio West murder in 2013 Brunswick and Jekyll Island Park was a very uncomfortable part of Glynn County for Blacks.
Black Federal law enforcement agency trainees including APD officers attending FLETC were warned to avoid Brunswick as much as possible.

They could have gotten away with it if not for the video that Bryan took with his cellphone. It wasn't until a radio station got hold of it and made it public that an investigation even began. Maybe Greg and Travis McMichael actually thought that the video would exonerate them somehow. They may have believed that it showed that they acted in self-defense. What it showed was they lied to the police, ran down Arbery, called him the "N" word, and walked away without offering assistance as he lay dying.

The three murderers no doubt thought they were in the right by going after Arbery. That says a lot about society. It makes you wonder how many times people have gotten away with blatant acts of racism and associated violence. How many murders have gone uninvestigated and unresolved simply because it was white people killing black people.

Yes, it was actually a local criminal defense attorney who released the video, thinking it might exonerate them. He must be as stupid and deluded as the perpetrators.

I love this sentencing!!! @Ronni @SeaBreeze It may very well have been that they figured since they're White, no way they'd have to pay for what they did. I'm not discounting other reasons mentioned here, however. Mrs Arbery, God love her, showed dignity and grace throughout this entire ordeal. Children aren't born racist, they are taught it. Often that ingrained racism goes back generations. There is no easy fix for this but prosecuting people like them as well "Killer Kops" is a start.

Racists use this type of ploy often. They'll start a fight with someone they hate, then when their victim resists or retaliates, they use that as an excuse to escalate the conflict, hoping for a deadly end, then try to call it self defense.

Yes, racism is usually taught. My mother tried to teach all 3 of her kids. She only succeeded with my brother. That's why he was her favorite. I often told my mom, "You can have him; he's your mistake - and dad's." She'd curse me & I'd laugh. 😂
And she cursed fluently in English, Hebrew & Arabic. :ROFLMAO:

The face of Prejudice:
If you hate Black adults, you also must hate black children.
If you hate Oriental adults, you also must hate oriental children.
If you hate Hispanic adults, you also must hate Hispanic children.
And so on....

And if you hate children, you are a dangerous vile human.

You really do have to wonder about the depth of their inner hatred. If I remember correctly, the man who owned the construction property in question stated publicly that while Mr. Arbery was seen on camera, he was not seen to damage or take anything. And for this he received threats. For stating the facts.

People are curious and nosy. Going and looking at a construction site is not unusual. I'll bet people did at the apartments that were built down the street from me.
