We went to my 9 year old granddaughter’s birthday party yesterday. It was held at an archery range because Lucy had gone with her folks a couple months earlier and LOVED it and decided that’s where she wanted her birthday party this year.
While the kids were taking a break to eat pizza I asked one of the instructors to show me how the bow worked and requested to use one. They were all lovely, set me up with the bow and an easy target, gave me basic instruction and then stood back. BULLSEYE my first shot!!
Obviously a fluke, but man!! What fun! They set me up again. Next one still hit the target but went wide. Gave me a couple more tips, adjusted my hold, set me up for a third time, this time with a solo cup on top of the target and I hit it first shot!
The girls got really excited then, pinned four balloons to the target and asked me to hit as many as I could. It all felt so natural..the stance, the feel of the bow in my hand, the aiming…like something very familiar though I’d never held a recurve bow in my life!
Damned if I didn’t hit all 4 of those balloons first shot each one! I’d had no idea that the kids and parents had started watching me till I popped that last balloon and I heard cheering behind me!!
Clearly these were relatively close targets because the party was set up for kids. But they’d given me an adult bow and arrows and set me up well back from the kids line. It was such a rush!!
The oldest instructor said very enthusiastically that I had natural talent and she hoped I’d pursue it. Of course that made me feel good!
And I am going to pursue it, because it felt fantastic and the only time I feel that special kind of rush is when I dance well and when I kayak in white water! I’d be thrilled to add another passion!!
