Mrs L. and I had a modest wedding - where we felt like gatecrashers at someone else's party. In 1973, the choices were basically a church wedding or a civil one. Civil ones were looked upon as a rather shoddy affair, so although not having any religious beliefs, we had a church one.
Things have changed now. In Scotland you can get married anywhere and have a dignified civil or Humanist wedding. These have become more popular than Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) or Catholic weddings.
None of my children are married, but should then choose to, I have made it clear that I'm not paying for what could be no more than a party for a bunch of freeloaders.
