Are People More "Thin Skinned" than Before?

The WG backlash has more to do with social media like facebook and twitter, easily making mountains out of mole hills with anything politically incorrect and then broadcasting management realizing they will be next if they don't publicly side with the loud masses. Note am not part of any post smartphone social media for a list of reasons, one being it is manipulated by both biased members and media with agendas. Especially cannot stand the political diarrhea. Thus a form of social brain washing on both ends of the political spectrum.

Thin skinned? Well maybe within specific demographics but really, many people were quite inflexible back during the early counterculture era for anyone different from acceptable norms of the masses. The main difference in that era outside of news media was there was no social media for peons to interact with. The most individuals could do is be critical within local groups. More a term to use about individual's behavior and personality though understand your intent.

Good gosh, YES!
With all the political correctness, the "Woke brigade" the millenniums, The snowflakes, and gender identify bovine scat.
You bet, people are getting more thin-skinned!
All I can say is if you are that thin-skinned stay away from Australia, as we are well known for taking the Mick out of everything, and most celebrities and politicians.

yes and that's how we used to be here in the UK... but more and more we're being controlled to be zombies..

I think people have always been thin skinned. But, it was not to their advantage to do anything about it. So, they just sluffed it off. Now, the internet makes it easy to complain, so they do. Big companies don't really care about the issues. But, they do care about profits, so they try to cover their a##es by censuring people who cause an uproar. And, now it's very easy to cause an uproar. Anything that can be taken wrong, will be.

I recently watched the whole series of Muppet shows on Disney+. Many of the episodes had a warning that they contained objectionable material. It was a challenge to figure out what they were talking about.

When's the last time you heard a Polish joke? My apologies to our Polish members. You may now make fun of my ethnicity, whatever it is.

I agree. In my country there is a lot of political correctness. There are no written laws against it but it's understood. If you don't agree with what is being preached by the government regarding immigration, the all inclusive society, Covid19 vaccination, etc. you are made to feel like some sort of trouble maker. No, it's not Germany in 1940 nor Russia in 1949, no one will arrest you, but you will be made to feel that you are "behind the times." There is a lot of anger out there and I have no idea where this is going?
trouble is...in the Uk people are being arrested..

Now about these thin skinned people - if you are thinking of going into an aged care environment, better grow another layer of skin.
Because, everyone there is ageing and have their own problems and have no time or patience to chouchouté (molly coddle) you.

I would rather talk to my horse than to some people. I do think, if these people had a more active lifestyle, they would feel less inclined to be bothered with petty, childish non-sense.

It was said a few months ago about young people here,
they are too busy demonstrating to look for work, and if
they don't demonstrate or look for a job, they are lazy!

Mike.

People to seem to take offence too easily, I think.
When I was a kid, I (& everybody I knew) was taught "Do not insult people." Logical, as even children knew what it meant. Time down the line, the word basically vanished, and was replaced with 'offend.'
It's much more than changing a word. It takes responsibility for one's actions off oneself, and turns it into responsibility for how someone else will 'take' what is said.

Needless to say, it gives a lot of room for manipulation.

One example I encountered: there was a Yahoo group that was for people who loved cats. While it may not be uncommon for topics to veer in other directions, one was particularly outrageous. It came to individuals remarking about minorities, and stating if there are Blacks or Hispanics in your church you should keep an eye on the collection plate- in other words, presenting minorities as thieves.
However- when I complained about this to the group's admin, he replied: "You don't have the right to not be offended."

It went further. A local Facebook group was outrageous enough that it made the local news. Seemed individuals were going around the city taking pictures of people (even without their knowledge/consent), and posting the photos on their page along with nasty remarks about how awful people looked, that they should consider suicide, etc.

I brought this over to SF. Members used words like psychopaths, sick, bullying, sadistic, etc., to describe individuals who did these things.
But it went beyond publicly humiliating people, to 'get your sensitive butt-hurt out of here.'

In other words, 'evvverything's a joke,' and if anyone is upset about it, it's said to be some kind of defect on their part.
I encountered this in a book I read long ago about abusive parents- the approach 'whatsamatter, can't you take a joke? you sure do over-react. you're too sensitive..' etc.
And I've even seen this approach on this forum.

Personally, I believe what some of us were taught as little kids was the right approach.

WoW!!!

One thing that seems nicer is that it is people and groups nowadays that are being all thin-skinned. I think that is better than when it is a political power or religion-power that is thin-skinned too, it is so scary when people are killed or imprisoned for having a belief or heritage that is contrary to a power-group. Like that famous guy in the middle ages that spent the last part of his life in house arrest for writing a book about some science topic (I think maybe about how the movements of the planets etc indicated that the Earth revolved around the Sun instead of vice-versa).

Galileo?

Yes, and I believe "cancel culture" has become much too prevalent. I wanted to inject a little humor into the thread.

Note that PC stands for Politically Correct and hopefully you will enjoy the clip. These are not necessarily my views but we even have to laugh at ourselves sometimes. I'll warn you that is irreverent and has some offensive language.
