Are Social Networking Sites Good For Our Society?

If you're asking about FB, Twitter, and the like, I think they are all very bad for society, as they let each individual live in an imaginary bubble, "surrounded" by those who are like-minded, for the most part, and serve to puff up an individual's self-image to the point of a realty disconnect. Also, the lunatic fringe find that they are not alone in their insanity, and that gives them the "courage" to commit atrocities that we read about far too frequently, these days.

I think they can be great. I keep in touch with family, friends and also the locals that I might not meet if it weren't for Facebook. We have a buy, sell, trade group, a neighborhood watch group, a neighborhood news group which helps me stay connected to my community. The neighborhood watch group is where we list lost pets, let people know there is a cow or goat out in the road, any suspicious activity going on etc. I do get rid of (unfriend) anyone who posts many negative posts, political, religious, or anything in poor taste by my standards.
