Are there any Poets among us? Looking to have my first book of Poetry published

I love Poetry...so much so, I am working on having my first book of poetry published. I am currently taking a poetry class..truth be told its wayyyy over my head but I am determined to stick with it. It's amazing how things come back around in life that is meant to be. Many years ago I wrote a poem which was published in a book and here I am many years later looking to have my first poetry book published. Priceless!!!!!

I have an unfinished poem on the go...just can't seem to find the third and fourth lines, though. It goes...

I love you more than pizza!
Isn't that kinda neat-za?

(Keeding! I wish you success in your poetry endeavor for sure!) :)

There is a story (I assume true) about a bet between friends that one of them, a budding poet, couldn't get a poem published in the NY Times.
This required a bit of devious thinking, so he wrote a letter to the NY Times along the lines of..
Dear Editor. I am trying to locate the author of a poem called ..... which begins...... Perhaps one of your knowledgeable readers could help.
He then wrote another letter. Dear Editor, with regard to the request for information about the author of ...... I have an early published book of his work which contains the lines to which he refers... The poem reads ...............

Is self publishing really publishing? Vanity Press, it's called where you pay them, they don't pay you, to "publish."

I'm pleased to hear more of us have written and experienced seeing our poems in print! I had a poem published in the late 90s that I wrote about/for my first grandson! I bought the entire book of poems. Just last week I wrote another one for a girlfriend who is being honored in our state for Democrat of the Year! It will be shown digitally during our dinner with top state Democrats. I am so proud of her.
I often write poems for co-workers retiring, recalling some fun moments with them.
It is something I enjoy, and the words simply flow....
Congrats, @Ladybj .:)

Not necessarily the same.
Traditionally, a Vanity press was a printer that printed up large quantities of books (for a price), shipped them to the writer, and the writer was on his/her own to sell them. I think that's what was mentioned in an episode of "The Waltons"

In recent decades, self-publishing has "helped" to "shrink" traditional publishing houses.
However, they aren't all the same, either. Not counting scams, there are companies which, for a big price, do everything from editing to marketing. There are also companies that do not charge writers anything, but market the books in various online places.

I love Robert Frost and also used to read a lot of Lawarence Ferlinghetti, I bet no one here has heard of him...

I studied one of his poetry books in high school. Most of his poems were a bit odd, but his free hand style was something that I enjoyed. I used this style in a creative writing class in college and ended up getting an A, his style suited me for writing poetry.

As an example of his work this book captures a lot of his style. A Coney Island of the Mind
He was also a writer of novels and plays, but always a bit outside of the norms...

I'm familiar with Lawrence Ferlingetti- one of the "Beat" (beatnik era) writers!!!

Thank you for posting. I looked up the site and saved it in my favorites. I am a bit out of the norm and fine with it. I am a "think outside of the box" type personality. If you ask for my opinion make sure you want it..I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear, I will tell you what you asked for...my opinion. :)

I am learning about great poets in my Poetry Class.. Robert Frost is one of them as well as Ezra Pound, W.B. Years T.S. Eliot to name a few.

That is awesome!!!! I enjoy poetry. It takes me into another World "sort of speak". Thank you!!!

I find @Gary O' to be a poet, maybe not in the traditional sense but his words strike some kind of chord with me.
Yeah, put a couple together a while back
Got a few thoughts on a couple more

I like reading poetry that has a picture to go with it so you can read the poetry and see the picture at the same time.
I like that too

I have written poetry, @Ladybj! How many pages do you have? My first poetry book was around 90 poems. I published it in 2006 through iUniverse. Who is publishing your work? Just curious.
My desire is 100 poems. I am no where near that amount at the moment. However, I keep in mind - how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time 😃

Right on! I like straightforward people!!!

I loved to write poems and wrote a book. Self published it, and sold about 2-3 copies which were brought by friends of mine. Then I saw a website on song lyrics. I though my poetry, with a little tweaking could be lyrics. A ten song album of my lyrics will be published later this year by a publisher who loved them. Won't cost me cent and I can hardly wait to see if the Album sells more than 2-3 copies.

Best of luck to all poetry writers.
