Are you a shredder?

I made a small incinerator from an old charcoal grill with a wire screen rolled into a cylinder to contain the papers and burn. When the ashes cool, I dump them in the grass and run the mower over them and the ashes get spread to the winds. So much personal information is available now with the internet though, that destroying old papers only scratches the surface.

I shred most things. I tried the roller ID stamp but it did not last long. I tried 2-3 different brands and they were all the same. I keep black sharpies and on some things I just black out with them. I tried the store brand sharpies and they do not cover like the original Sharpies. They last a long time and I was able to get some from Amazon for $l.00 each.

What do you do with old documents that contain personal information before you dispose of them?

Do you burn or shred them or do you just throw them out with the other trash?

I'm a big shredder, any document that has any kind of personal information goes through the shredder before it goes to recycling.
Seeing all our garbage is taken by truck by my son-in-law to the transfer station, all burnable trash is burned in our big burn barrel out back...a great system!

I shred, then burn the shreds, mix the ashes, then bury them at an undisclosed location.
I passed my shredder on when I moved to the Prairies ten years ago...burning is the name of the game for many things for paper materials, branches, leaves, amazon boxes, etc, etc.

We scan 99% of our documents that we need, then shred them. We use Evernote to organize and “file” our scanned documents and I love it. I can do a simple keyword search and it picks out any document with those keywords. Plus I can search from my phone or computer which is very helpful when I need quick access to a document if I’m at the doctors or lawyers etc.

I am a shredder. And thank you for the reminder. :) I finally did some shredding yesterday. I had a large shopping bag filled with papers (they used to pile up on the table I'm using as a desk in our studio). The bag started overflowing so I knew I had to get to it but was putting it off. Having gotten started, I'm motivated now to continue this weekend. I shred anything that has my name on it, regardless of importance or lack thereof. I get way too much junk mail, which is annoying. Now that the medicare solicitations are over Optimum is #1 on the list of annoying junk mail. I finally called to have my name removed because they send stuff a couple of times a week. I am no longer a customer and don't intend to ever be again.

When my husband was living and I wasn't keeping up with the shredding, I'd wind up with 30 gallon trash bags that we would take to the shredder truck whenever we could catch the truck in town. For $12 minimum, he'd dump the stuff into his truck and in a matter of seconds, it was confetti. Last time I went, a friend took me, the shredder man had gotten a new truck and it went up to $20 (still worth it to me). Now that my husband is gone and I don't drive, it's best I keep up with the shredding.
