Are you aware of "Shrinkflation?"

I've never heard that word before, but yes, it is an iritation when manufacturers say they are holding prices the same, but slyly reduce the size of the object, ie 'Shrinkflation'.

On a lighter note, well, you most likely expected something loony from me.
If you, Old Salt, hadn't explained the meaning of 'Shinkflation', I would have suggested that it was the getting rid of wind from inside us, commonly called a good 'fart'. 😊

This has been going for years. Many don't catch it because they packaging is the same but the numbers or quantity is different. Always read the ounces/weight. Or the number of pills in a bottle. Found old generic tylenol bottles from the dollar store, they used to give 50 tablets now many generics/discounters only give 24-30 pills

Orange juice went through this years ago when they dropped the 1/2 gallon 64oz carton to 59oz. Some brands are now 48-52 oz. Same for things like pretezels. What used to be a 12-16 oz bag of pretzels are as little as 8oz in the dollar stores.

Always read the quantity/oz!

I'm sure we are all aware of this. I've also noticed a change in the quality of certain goods. 'New and improved' usually means that the manufacturer has found a way to use cheaper ingredients, so increasing their profits but with less outlay.

Shrinkflation- never heard the term but manufacturers have been doing it for years. The one pound coffee can currently contains 10 oz. of coffee.
My pet peeve is yoghurt! They started with 150g containers, then whittled them down to 125g, after that a steady decline of contents, 100g, 75g and now finally we have pitiful 50g little tubs .. but the price has remained steady! I realize that things get more expensive over a period of time. I remember 20 cent hamburgers and steak at .70 cents a pound! But I would prefer if the companies maintained the size and raised the price! It just seems so sneaky the other way!

Something that is really bothering me, because of the greed and deception behind it. In inflationary times just stick to the same price but reduce the contents! Have you paid attention to this practice? Does it upset you?
Absolutely... it's gotten really bad and far-reaching. Last thing I noticed... a slice of cheesecake from my supermarket bakery. It now costs double what it did a year ago and the pieces shouldn't be called slices... should be "slivers."

Most people don't read the actual contents, e.g., ounces, grams, or how many pieces. I do the calculations, because I want to know what I'm paying for.

But I admit that I've been fooled too, when I "assume" that the package on the shelf today is the same size as the package I bought last month.

Sadly, many people aren't good at arithmetic. So if the package size changes and/or the price changes, they don't realize how much they're being ripped off.

And some people just don't care! Someone near and dear to me is like that: fatalistic! Why get upset about those things. You can't change them! It is my belief that if more people did pay closer attention companies would change their sneaky ways!

I like the word, new to me. But the practice is not...

I think in some cases its to make the calories appear less, pretty sure that's true of some yogurts. Reduce the size and it reduces the calories, and many consumers just look at that, not calories per ounce or gram...
You might be right! Nothing is ever black and white! Some other factors might sneak in now and then.

This is a good forum to ask the following question: Has the quality of fast food declined over the years! I won't name any FF Joints because I don't want them to sue me, but I am convinced that things (chicken, hamburgers, pizzas, chinese) don't taste as delicious. My daughter thinks it might be my deteriorating palate and she might be right! What do you think?

I am definitely not a fast food aficionado but some chains have advertised that they have lowered salt and fat content. Could that be the reason?

Well I'll name one! 🤭 NOT because of the quality of the food though. McDonalds... we did the drive-thru with my daughter last week. A few burgers, an order (only 6 pc) of nuggets... two small shakes. *TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS.* I kid you not. The food to me tastes like it always has, but they're now charging two bucks for those burgers that were on the 99 cent menu relatively recently.

I'm expecting some good old fashioned boycotts to start cropping up. I understand inflation and recession, but I have noticed an awful lot of things that have literally doubled in price (like those burgers.)

This is why I do not eat out, I am both picky about my food and frugal.

I made an exception today and took a friend for lunch for her birthday. She had a burger and fries, I had a piece of fish, mostly batter with fries and coleslaw (about a heaping tablespoon} The bill came to almost $40 and I left a $10 tip as the waitress was very nice.

Will I make a habit of this.....snort.....maybe on my friends next birthday

In my case I blame my palate. There are things I just don't like anymore than I used to love. That's very disappointing.

I know, isn't it awful? There are so many foods I used to love that I don't like any more! And I haven't found anything to replace them. I've been reduced to eating mostly pasta with varying toppings!

I hadn't realized it but pasta is still a favorite. Must be the Italian seasoning or maybe the texture. I still like macaroni and cheese and pasta salads too.

Call it shrinkflation or deception, The UK adopted the metric system, previous fuel was sold in gallons, now it's sold in litres. There's four and a half litres in a UK gallon. Garages, (&Government, fuel carries very high taxes) would have to sell their fuel at today's prices at around £7.73 a gallon. That is exactly what they are doing only the motorist sees the price in litres so it's only £1.70. What a rip off.
