Are you concerned about guests on this board

deb's thread I believe.
Still don't know what you are talking about as I don't post my personal information on social media.
When you are required to sign electronic forms for medical care in the doctor's office you are also giving them permission to share your data for "research", which they don't disclose to you. The secretive nature of electronic forms makes it hard for patients to know where their data goes when in the hands of third parties. I have been yelled at for requesting a copy of what I was required to sign before seeing the doctor and in other cases totally refused to be given the financial agreement. I suppose that makes it easier for them to change what ever they want once you sign off electronically.
Again, I never said I post my medical information on social media...again, it is being distributed by medical institutions claiming it is for "research". I don't think it is fair when someone needs medical care to be required to sign off on data mining and I don't think I'm the only one they do that to.

Forums should be the least you need to be worried.

I used to sell my software online, buyers need to give me all their info except credit cards to make an order, not that I can't get their CC info, I really don't want that responsibility, so I used third party payment gateway.

I worked for one of the biggest hotel booking companies as a programmer, I can see all customers' private information including credit cards, hundreds of thousands of them. I can write a program to export one million CC info within minutes. But no one in their right mind would do that.

Someone once giving their full name, that of their kids, and spouse's full name and address once drove me so crazy I wound up in a heap of trouble I probably deserved. I'll take this moment to say 'thank you' @Matrix

I got a funny Email today just over an hour ago, I have been
working on a solar power thing, my version which is portable,
I call it my project and discussed it with the same friend that I
have coffee with, I also had my neighbour in looking at it last
week, whether discussions were overheard, or somebody in China,
where I sourced all or most of the components, told somebody
about me buying lots of interesting bits.

Anyway a copy of the contents of the Email is below.

Mike.

Dear Sir,

Am Chin Yeoh a legal/Financial Consultants, i'm interested to know more about your projects.

We would also like to invest in private sector projects with an established company in any project(s)
which are already in the market and have market value or new company requiring the injection of
huge funds, provided there are lots of opportunities available, taking into proper consideration the
Return on Investment (ROI) based on a ten (10) years strategic plan.

kindly furnish me with your BP/Summary & Contact details to his direct email address for review and
possible funding of your project.

Best Regard.

Chin Yeoh

Now, that's just bizarre! Either one of your buddies passed along some info to this company, or their email has been hacked.
Be careful. And good luck getting to the bottom of this.

This man is Chinese and is in China, they push money around,
usually to deprived countries in Africa, or South America, they
were also friends with Russia, but that relationship fell apart last
week I believe.

I will be careful, I won't be taking his money and his Email address
etc., will be blocked, I only used it as an example about who finds
out about things and acts accordingly, we used to call it spam.

Mike.

As for spammers collecting data or our email addresses. I have a dedicated Yahoo email that I use only for sites such as this one, FB, and other message and game sites. I also have another that is basically a throwaway email for once only or limited use, such as sites that I use on a limited basis, or for shopping at places other than Amazon. Gives me a better handle on where unwanted or spammy email is coming from.

True! And then you can buy access. Worked with a woman who bought into a online detective site and looked up people.

Also criminal records are public. Even if you just got a ticket, which I have one, it's public.
NOT in Canada. Criminal conviction records are not available to the public. BUT if you apply to work with children, even as a unpaid volunteer, you have to go to the local Police and request a "criminal records check ". It will show that you do not, or do, have a criminal record. IT WILL NOT show what you were convicted of. The Personal Protections provisions in Canada are a lot tougher than in the USA, for sure. JimB.

I don't bother looking up guests. Any phone call or email I receive and I don't recognize - I delete without answering. The only reason I like to know where someone lives (on this forum) is the interesting stuff they say about it. I think Matrix is awesome and not just because I like his name!

I was checking to see who was on the board. Got my feelings hurt by another member, so I was waiting for a reply. @Matrix, they were so many guests viewing, so many bots. The only thing I could think is they are looking for personal information, gleaning what they can from profiles. Makes me worry about safety of information some post. I never did a full profile, where I live, birthday etc. Should we be concerned, I don't go into detail but some might. My detail is only related to everyday life. Can any other information be obtained by our activity on the board. Would it be best for people not to post where they live,,,,etc and any other personal information, can anyone access email addresses etc. Is this information protected? Just trying to make sure we are all safe. Thanks.
Can I make a request? Would you plz keep this thread bumped up so it doesn't disappear onto another page? There's something I really want to say, but I can't think clearly (exhaustion), maybe after a night's sleep I'll be able to..
If so, I'd appreciate it.

I gave up with Facebook about 2.5 years ago and haven't gone back and I sure as hack don't miss it. Never been on Twitter and don't want to go there.

I have often read how crooks around the world go on social media to gather information. Sort of justifies my not going on social media again. Senior Forums is plenty "social" for me.

I'm not concerned about guests also. Why? There are many people who don't create an account at once but read the various threads, to get an idea, how the members are and if they can relate to them. I waited three months, only reading as a guest, before I created my account. We have a saying in German: "Darum prüfe, wer sich ewig bindet, ob sich nicht noch etwas Besseres findet." Deepl.com translates it into: "Therefore, let him who commits himself forever test himself to see if he can't find something better." (Usually used in terms of marriage).

I am not concerned about guests on this board but for this reason only or mostly.
The majority of online groups such as ours here, can be read 'offline' by anyone, even
our own members can read Seniorforums. 'off line' and without ever signing in/logging
in.

On the internet/online of course there exist 'private' groups in which one has to be
a member to view topics and discussion etc.

Anything we post, discuss, share (with exception to our private account information)
can be read by anyone passing through, it has always been this way.

SO, when I post, discuss, or would share any personal, private thoughts or ideas, info
about my health or medical during discussion on a topic here, Yes it can be viewed by
anyone who wants to view it offline...

I'm not concerned about guests. Considering the intense, rigorous, grueling membership interrogation program we went through to become full-fledged members, like typing in a username & a password.
