Are you keeping too many clothes?

Don't know why I am keeping all the clothes I wore before I retired. I only wear work clothes around the house now, and rarely go out to anything fancier than Home Depot or Walmart. There is limited closet space in this old house. If I would do laundry more often I could probably get by with just 3 drawers and half a closet. But I just cant't ever seem to get around to downsizing.

How about you?

I haven't had a job where I had to dress up since 2004, so most of those clothes are long gone. When I lost a lot of weight in 2011 I got rid of all my fat clothes so I wouldn't have any backup if I gained. I do have some clothes I haven't worn in years, but keep them in case I might wear them.

Funny this thread came up.. I just today donated two huge bags of clothes to AmVets.. When I switched out my winter for summer clothes, I pitched anything I haven't worn in over a year.. or anything that no longer fit.. too big.. or too small..

I got rid of oodles of clothes last fall. Couldn't believe I had so much - really nice stuff too, but not needed anymore. Let someone else enjoy them.

I'll have to admit that I have a hard time getting rid of clothes. I have a whole shelf in the closet full of things that I'm positively-absolutely-for certain sure I'm going to lose enough weight to get into. And then there's the rack of things that don't go with anything else I have........hope springs eternal that I'll find THE PERFECT THING one of these days to go with them. Then there's the chest full of business clothes that I.just.might.need if I ever go back to work (in other words, NEVER!!!)

Every few years I get a bag together of good clothes that we don't wear anymore, but I still have stuff in my closet. I never got into dressing up at all, so most of them are casual everyday clothes. Pants that don't zip up anymore, but only a couple of inches away, so I keep them and am working on it.

Probably----but mostly dress suits and ties. I looked in my closet and tried on a couple of pin stripe suits that still fit just fine but I no longer have a need for them so off to "Good Will" they will go. The three sports coats however, I will keep for that occasion that I need a dress jacket.

I also just got rid of a bag full of clothes and even came across a pair of brand new jeans (tags and stickers still on them). My closet looks so much more organized and I keep going in there just to admire it! And three cheers for a pair of new jeans! I was just thinking last week that maybe I need to go looking for another pair and now I don't have to.

I weeded out a lot of clothes (and other things) when I moved about 10 yrs ago. Then did it again about 6 yrs ago. Now I don't shop for office/work clothes. I just make sure I have someting nicer to wear to a funeral, nice restaurant, etc.

I've got clothes I've had for years. I look after them and rarely throw anything out before it is too small or really worn out.

The jacket and trousers I wore to town yesterday were bought when I lived in Germany, and I left there in '91!

I got rid of 2 bags of clothes about 2 years ago. My closet was full of clothes that were too big for me. These were nice clothes that I wore to church when they fit. I decided to have a "clean out" and I was going to donate them to Goodwill. While I was trying them on, I came across a lavender top that made me think of a lady that goes to my beauty shop. She had told me lavender was her favorite color and when I saw this, I wondered if she could wear them and wanted them. I called her and she jumped at the chance to get them. I took them to the shop and she cried. She told me she had been needing new clothes but was unable to hold out to shop for them and this was an answer to her prayers. They all fit her perfectly! This made me so glad I got rid of them and let her have them. She told me later when her daughter say all of those clothes, she asked, "Is she alright". I thought that was funny. :)

I recently took inventory of my wardrobe and I concluded that I have uses for all my clothes. Sometimes being dressed, smelling good and looking good is a gateway to feeling good about yourself. I think every one male or female should take the time to take a nice shower or bath and make up and dress up. You don't have to leave your home just do it for yourself. Make a meal, add your favorite drink and sit down knowing that you like what you are wearing and you are feeling fresh. It can be movie day or night at home. Treat yourself. If you go shopping buy something you like. If it is something that you don't want to wear in public, wear it in the privacy of your home. Be good to yourself.

Too many clothes, Moi.?...lemme tell you when Harrods runs low on stock they call me!!

I was giggling to myself reading some of you have enough unwanted clothing every couple of years to fill a bag or 2 for goodwill, would you believe me if I tell you I can fill 3 or 4 Sacks at least 3 times a year?...and I do..

I've got plenty of decent clothes...about the only thing I need to replace on occasion are some work shirts and pants for puttering around outdoors. For those, I shop the clearance racks, or stop by Goodwill/Salvation Army every year or so. The last time, I bought 4 pants and 6 shirts for about $25. I took all my old "Fat" clothes to the Salvation Army when I finally trimmed off my belly fat. My routine purchases are probably for socks and underwear. I have a good rack of heavy winter clothes in the basement, and I always keep an eye out for a pair of boots in the clearance racks.

The Wife, However, is a "Clothes-oholic". She has 3 closets full, including at least 50 pairs of shoes, and we can't drive within 10 miles of a Kohl's store without making the "detour"....and she is a "goldstar" shopper on QVC. Last Fall, we took 2 big bags, probably 50 lbs., of her "out of style", some still with tags, stuff to the Salvation Army.

Oh well, she's a great cook and housekeeper, and we get along quite well after almost 50 years, so I keep my mouth shut.

you! You! Brovo!!!

I don't have a lot of closet space for my clothes and I'm no fashionista so I like to keep it simple and streamlined. I weed stuff out at least four times a year and give it to Goodwill. But since retirement, I find that I'm buying less. Jeans and T-shirts are my uniform.

Last year I got rid of every thing I hadn't worn in a year. That thinned out my closet nicely and gave me plenty of room. Now, sadly I have a full closet. Tee shirts and tops I will never wear. Yet I have nothing to wear.

They say that if you haven't worn an item in 2 years then you never will, so give it away.I like the term Goodwill, we call them charity shops which doesn't sound as nice.I do seem to have a lot of clothes, but clothing now just doesn't last the way it used to, items are cheaply made, even when bought from good sources, all made in China!I try to buy from Britain and from Europe but it's actually getting harder and harder to find them.I don't have anything new with tags still on, or clothes that don't fit me from years ago.I think I have the right amount really, maybe a tad too much.

Oh yes ,I need clean out, when we started ballroom dancing I had one skirt....... Now I have 38 NoniB skirts for those who don't know NoniB its an upmarket ladies wear shop .... ( NoniB quite often have sales offering 30% off that's when I buy a ANOTHER new skirt) I dont like frilly clothes most of my skirts and tops are Jersey type fabric I have a couple of chiffon skirts but the are generally to hot for dancing

I like your style!

I have my wife's things to dispose of. three wardrobes and four chests of drawers (one of them nothing but cashmere!), and that does not include shoes ("You can't have too many shoes").

I;

'm hoping I can persuade a charity shop to collect, that's one heck of a lot of black bags!

I normally use Banardo's , my wife was a abused child.

I do use the Sally Ann, as they were there for me a couple of times, but tend to use them for disability stuff, like wheelchairs, commodes and the like.
