Are you prepping for potential port strike.

We are constantly making things and storing them in our cellar. While this is a United States problem, it WILL affect Canada also.
Before Canadian teams joined Major League Baseball, the fall classic, just as today... is called the "World Series", despite excluding most of the world.

Interestingly, we have a strike between...
  • United States Maritime Association (USMX)
  • International Longshoreman Association (ILA)
Now guess which association is actually U.S. and which is International, (as in not U.S.)

You are correct in stating this will impact Canada, as your largest pension fund is sole owner of "Ports America", which is part of the USMX... along with a diversified group, which includes the People's Republic of China.

Just some interesting tidbits to chew on, in case some snacks become unavailable. :)

The union seems to be worried about automation ie job security. There are very few jobs and companies that offer a 30 year career and a gold anymore. I've seen company unions emphasize job security that the company started using contractors, sub contractors and broke off parts of the company. This is an unrealistic demand or expectation in general with any employee at any company. Even in this day and age with the money they make they could be prepared for a full retirement in less than 20 years IF THEY plan for their future.

This union has been offered 'a' raise which will be with them as a starting point for any raises and next contract.

If the union wants to play the safety game then go for it but those facilities probably have more safety rules, procedures and regulations than most work sites. I knew people who worked for OSHA and alot not all accidents are frequently employees forgetting or ignoring procedures.

The NRLB or president needs to step in and suspend the strike being it's critical infrastructure.

I did make it to the store today for a brief produce run and I'm happy to say they had lots of bananas and fresh fruit and veggies plus I also got some TP. They still had a good selection of organic meat too. It won't last if things drag on but it was not as terrible as I was being led to believe.

And so it begins! My son said there was no water and no toilet paper when he went to Costco this evening. We have three Costcos in our vicinity but since he's preparing for a weekend trip, he won't have time to check the others this week. My son uses a lot of bottled water and prefers Poland Spring, so I don't know what he's going to do. I drink Brita filtered water and when I'm outside the house, sometimes I take Kirkland water with me. I'm glad we got two bundles of TP over the past couple of weeks. We got a bundle before hearing about the strike, then last week I told him he'd better buy another, so we're good for at least 5 months.

I detest shopping, so I'm usually well-stocked with TP, paper towels, tissues, coffee, and cases of water. The freezers are full, and the liquid cabinet is fully stocked. Fresh fruits and veggies are the only items I run out of weekly/bi-weekly, and there hasn't been any difficulty locating anything in that department thus far.

Here we go again.... panic buying so suppliers can overcharge us even more. Eggs were $5.00 per dozen at Stop and Shop yesterday! Nope!
Yeah, eggs are up again. Even so, they're still a relatively affordable source of protein when compared to other things. I'll continue to buy them because I don't want to eat cereal for breakfast every day.

And to think when I bought groceries a few days back they gave away a case of bottled water with every purchase over $100.

I don't normally use it myself, but I don't leave money on the table. I'll probably hang onto it to use for car trips, but I'm not sure I want to drink water that's been sitting in plastic for too long a time.

I hear you. but I'll eat anything for breakfast. Still,,,, I don't think we get eggs shipped in by sea and needing to dock and I haven't heard about another round of avian flu so.....I suspect thievery, Of course I could be wrong and probably am. *sigh* All this inflation/shrink-flation just infuriates me. Bah!

Well it's good to have on hand. For instance, I don't know if you remember when I posted that our city and surrounding areas didn't have drinkable water for several weeks. The cities were handing out cases of bottled water to all who lined up. We were even given a case by someone who somehow received too much. But we already had plenty here due to our purchase habits.

Since it's been recently reported that scientists have found plastic particles in human bodies from bottled water (gee...they couldn't have told us sooner?!:sneaky:), it probably doesn't much matter how long the water has been bottled. I do know it's not good to leave them in warm places for too long. It's also not advisable to drink water that's been impacted by flood waters, even though the caps are allegedly tightly sealed.

Been dealing with hoarders as-is any time a store has a good sale or they cut the price on stuff they want to get rid of someone comes buys remaining stock. Small businesses seem to be using reduced prices/supermarkets as their wholesaler/supplier. One lady got into a 'discussion' with a store manager demanding a call when the next batch came in at that price and she would buy it all from them.

Unless the stuff has been sitting on the shelf for days/weeks I limit myself to two. Don't want to become one of them.

Little food here in California comes through sea ports. If others were like this person, retail industries other than electronic stuff, with all their junk would collapse.
So ...YAWN
