Are you stiff/sore/achy when you arise?

I move very fluidly during the course of my day. But when I first get out of bed I’m really stiff…especially my ankles!! 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 It recently occurred to me that maybe I have a touch of arthritis in my ankles as well as the bit I feel in my knees and one hip!

I lie in bed and stretch before so get up. It’s not like I go through a series of stretching exercises, I don’t mean that. It’s more like my body just takes over and my arms and legs extend and stretch as far as possible, and hold that position for a few beats (it’s a good thin Ron’s already up or I might knock him out of bed!) and I also arch my back in a stretch and hold that for a bit too.

Then I get up and walk stuff legged to the bathroom, and while I’m peeing I work my ankles flexing and rotating. By the time I put on my PJs and head to the kitchen for coffee, I’m moving fluidly again

It’s NOT some kind of planned stretching, like I’ve said. It’s only recently I’ve even realized that it’s what I do when I wake up (it’s pre-coffee so I’m barely coherent!) and I do it every morning!

What about you? Stiff when you first get out of bed? Stretches? Achy?

Surprisingly im quite agile when i wake in a morning , its night time when my right leg and foot stiffen up ,after breaking my Fibular last year ,and a bone in my foot previously .

Yes I am stiff and achy when first arising out of bed.

Before stretching I have a hot shower. For myself, it seems to help limber up my muscles and joints before stretching.

Then I walk every morning which also helps with stiffness/ aching joints and muscles.
A day of not moving enough is often more painful than a day of moving too much. ( for me)

The cortisone shot wore off after a month so I'm back to almost immediately after waking put a towel covered ice pack on my lower back for a couple of hours! Does help. Yes, getting out of my luscious bed into immediate pain no fun at all.

yep... as you all know, I've complained enough about my lower back, so yes it's stiff in the morning.

I do an exercise while lying on my back before getting up, called the Alexander technique before I get out of bed, and it helps to loosen it up...

When I first wake up, I sit on the side of the bed and do a roll call on my body to see how it's doing. Then the next big thing is standing up and walking a bit to see how all that works out. Then I'll pickup speed, get some coffee made, and get on with my day, 🍵☀️👍..

I've already mentioned my back's problems, so won't repeat myself 😆😆😆. Plus arthritis in my hands due to double joints.

One thing that was always uncomfortable was finding a good mattress. I'd always had to sleep on my side cause it was the least painful. Thankfully, all that changed after our Divan two piece bed base gave out during the night. We fixed it best as we could, but we knew it was time for a change.

Bed base and mattress were nearly 25 years old. The break must have happened with our last move. That explains why the movers put up our bed lol! Hide the truth, right?

That was December 2021. As that base was in such bad shape, I ran my fingers over to Amazon and found the best bed frame. Rating of two people combined of over 600kg. Such a light frame and room for 10 linen storage box under, with delicate head and footboard.

Mattress was heaven sent. From the British Heart Foundation. Memory foam throughout, not a spring in sight. Thank goodness...

Since then, I've been sleeping much better and when I wake up and get out of bed, I'm good. The pains I suffer from are upon standing up or sitting down. Knees are acting up but they have for a while.

As some of you might know, as we age we lose the fat pad on our feet. Mine have been cracka-lacking since around 2010. With good shoes, I can walk with the help of my cane, once I stop lol, that when they hurt like bleep lol!

Oh yes, but it doesn't last long.

I think most all of us are a bit stiff and/or achy in the morning. But you can minimize it a bit with a better diet. Avoid fried foods, especially deep fried foods fried in vegetable oil. Avoid processed foods and try to eat Whole Foods.
We have an excellent diet. No fried foods, no processed foods, whole grains, little red meat, lots of fruits and veggies, we cook everything from scratch. The occasional splurge makes sticking to our very clean diet possible! 😉 And that strict way of eating is what contributes to our fluidity of movement for both of us.

We’re both still working, and Ron especially, at 76, works a full day doing construction/carpentry in his construction business, so it’s especially important for him to stay loose and limber.

Yes, I wake up stiff, a bit sore and achy, generally takes me a full 15
minutes to unwind my body and get it ready for motion, stretches
and deep breathing are a must for me...

Yes, so are all my friends and acquaintances, I’m convinced it’s an after effect of the
coronavirus vaccine because we weren’t like it before, I used to zip about like a spring chicken

Well, working carpentry will get me a bit stiffer and achy right now at age 64, particularly a full day of it. I would imagine at age 76 it would be a lot more. Your husband is doing what very few at his age could do. I think your good diet and lifestyle played a part in that.

Yep, I slowly arise from bed with aches n pains following me...no excercise per se but do stretch a bit while doing my ablutions....odd thing I've noticed is that my mind seems to stay somewhat asleep till around noonish LOL.....ah well....:p
