Are you strictly a name brand shopper?

I buy both, but mostly generics. Downy fabric softener is one exception for me -- it just works better and doesn't have a strong lingering smell.

Tide makes me itch, so I never buy it and have found that the generics work just fine for laundry detergent. I do buy a particular brand of dishwasher detergent that I get online (name is Bubble Bandit). It does a hugely better job in my machine than anything I've found in brick and mortar stores. Maybe because our water here is hard -- but when I use it I get a much better result.
 

Tide is one of the few name brand products that I prefer over generics or store brands. O.K., I forgot Folgers coffee, for the price it fills the bill.

I wish my wife was more of a militant consumer, and cut the ties with the name-brand brainwashing of yesteryear.
 
I buy many name brand items, but try other products too. We use Tide also....a forum Tide Commercial...where is our Tide users commercial stipend. :)


Hey, good point Misty! You folks are all doing some great advertising for Tide. Could you get right on that to advise them where to send checks? They owe a few people here because we're pointing lurkers to a their product.

Me too. But I've used Tide my whole life. Now I'm embarassed to admit this 'cause of what everyone has said, but if it ain't broke why fix it?

I like clean laundry and I wear of lot of whites and light colors which Tide launders like new. Job done. I'm happy and I don't have to buy new clothes as often because my old ones look like almost new!

When it comes to shoes I do buy name brands. I prefer Easy Spirit which is healthier for my feet. They do cost more, but my health is worth that.
 
I remember when Whirlpool was the manufacturer for the Sears washer sold under the name of Kenmore, so I bet there's truth to what you say, Don.

Sure...there are only about 3 or 4 appliance manufacturers...each one making multiple "Name" brands. Sears, for example, certainly doesn't make any of their Kenmore appliances....they contract the actual manufacturing out to Whirlpool, GE, or whichever manufacturer offers them the best deal. The Name on the product has very little to do, anymore, with the contents or quality of the product.




If the truth were known, the Generic/Store Brand products are probably made by the Name Brand manufacturers, and are identical. The Walmart/Major grocery store brands, etc., list the same ingredients, and perform equally well to the Name brands. On Monday they make the Name brand,, and on Tuesday, they make the Store brand...on the same assembly line. The primary difference is the percentage of Profit the consumer pays.

I have been to many manufacturer's factories and have seen different labels being placed on the same bottles!! Also different food store trucks at their loading docks..
 
Our leading brand of liquid detergent here is Ariel ( which I use)... not surprisingly made by Proctor and Gamble the same manufacturer of Tide according to Wiki.. Ariel is...

We have loads of other very popular brands of course..Daz, Persil, Fairy to name a few ...and supermarket own brands too

Thanks, Holly, just seems strange that they are all made by the same company, I'm sure there are people off in advertizing land that know why.
 
I also buy both, buying more of the generic or store brands than are proven to be just as good.

Exceptions are-

Mayonnaise- has to be Hellman's

Laundry detergent- since washing for carpenter/builder husband and a young son whose laundry needed Tide ended; inexpensive detergent is fine for my clothes.

A bit of a "heads-up" about laundry detergents. Consumer Reports tested and Tide was their #2 choice. First choice was Wisk ... cleans best, costs much less per load.

My mayo also has to be Hellman's/Best Foods [ depends on which side of the U.S. you live in ].

And...my jeans. Must be Gloria Vanderbilt. For whatever reason they fit me better than any other.

My Dad was an executive for what was the only supermarket chain then....and even then, he said the same thing about store brands, Ken. The manufacturers of the name brands just change the labels and fill the containers with the same whatever.
I buy both generic and name brands. Whatever I find is the best vs most advertised.
Radish Rose, I agree about tomatoes from the San Marzano region of Italy. They are grown in volcanic ash soil and have less acidity then the usual canned tomatoes. Twice the price though. So I just use them in special sauces.

The only food we buy in tins is chopped tomatoes that hub uses in curry. We stock up on a name brand when on sale. The store brand is so pale you could barely say it was red. More water than tomatoes I'd guess.
 
I agree, Annie. I only use Italian canned tomatoes, for the same reason. Or make a sauce with roasted fresh tomatoes. Other than that only canned creamed corn for cornbread.
 
I sure don't. I switched to more natural cleaners and soaps years ago anyway.

I'll buy generics. A few things I stick to name brand like Alka Seltzer. My wonder drug. Cures my work induced headaches.
