Are You Trading One of Your Senses for Another in Your Old Age?

Seems to me that I'm having trouble reading things and seeing with my eyes, but my hearing is more keen. Hubby doesn't hear as well, but his eyesight is better...match made in heaven. :p

Do you find you have a weaker or stronger sense in your old age? :eek:ld:

I can smell frickin' everything. Hubby should be wearing glasses full time...no way he is ever going to admit THAT. So I read to him and tell him when fridge things are beyond un-fresh. I can't hear beyond loud and closed captioning so he helps me.

I have super hearing and sense of smell, but my memory seems to be getting shot more and more every day..:(..hubby has lost his sense of smell and taste by and large and doesn't enjoy food any more. I keep telling him to go and see the GP because at only a young acting 55 he needs to see if something is causing it..(but he won't go) .. and altho' he had to admit defeat and have specs for night driving a few years ago and he does wear them while driving ..he really now needs to get glasses for reading, but will he go and get tested.?.Not a chance!! I have to watch him holding print at arms length struggling to read it..or read little print for him. Can't say I've noticed that he's become keener in any other senses to offset the losses

I've always had impaired hearing, but as I age, my sense of smell has increased.

I can smell a cigarette being smoked long before anyone else does.

All in all I guess I'm doing good for my age, I wear glasses so I guess you could say my sight is good as long as I have my glasses on and as far as I can tell my sense of smell and taste are okay.

My hearing is pretty bad but I got a pair of free hearing aids from the VA about two years ago and they work really well when I wear them.

Sight excellent (with help of cataract surgery), hearing fine - no loss, sense of smell slightly diminished but still works, taste buds fine. Brain still works well except for a little short term memory loss.

Other losses .... sense of balance slightly off and I seem to have lost some of the tread on my finger tips. I can't grasp things as securely as once could. Re-tread possible? I'm 84.

2 years on since I last posted on this thread...and my memory is still shot... but I've noticed recently a loss of balance...I don't know why because I wouldn't have expected that at early 60's... I fall sideways...and seem to trip over nothing at all going forward ... In the last 3 months I've fallen backwards twice off the stepladder in the garden...

I have cataracts, but my eyesight is OK, for daytime driving. The volume on my TV goes from 0-100. At 75, I heard it OK. But if the AC is on, well, I have to put it up to 85. And if it's a woman's voice, well, 100. I do have a surround stereo system, with 100 watts to 11 speakers. I can put my TV audio through those, and then , my hearing is excellent.:)
I never really did have much horse sense, though.

I have balance problems, so I use a walker outside of my apartment, my eyesight has also diminished, as well
as my taste, my hearing and smell are o.k. so far. I am not complaining as I see others with more serious
problems here at the residence.
