Article: Facebook is Starting to Feed its AI with Private, Unpublished Photos

As with a lot of other things, many people judge FB pretty superficially... due partially to the sort of convenience it offers. I've known a lot of people who appreciate & enjoy FB, but I have a pretty low opinion of it. I've felt that way for a long time. "Disgusted" is maybe the best word for my feeling about the people & intentions steering FB/Meta.

From the article:
On Friday, TechCrunch reported that Facebook users trying to post something on the Story feature have encountered pop-up messages asking if they’d like to opt into “cloud processing”, which would allow Facebook to “select media from your camera roll and upload it to our cloud on a regular basis”, to generate “ideas like collages, recaps, AI restyling or themes like birthdays or graduations.”
Acquiring user data is the big money maker, I imagine at some point the terms will change to where the user is "opted in" by default, and would have to take steps to reverse that.

Facebook is just entertainment to me when I'm bored. Most, if not all, of the "stories" on there are fake as hell and I don't read most of them any more but I like to keep up with relatives and friends who post. I love the dog and cat videos. Those make my day....I mean, who doesn't have their spirits lifted watching animals make doofs of themselves. It's ever so much more entertaining that watching people doing it.

I find Reddit is better for that. Minimal use of FB and even that is with a filter - without it, it's unusable.

I hate this sort of thing. I've never had a Facebook account and never will. I do have an Instagram account, which is owned by Meta/Facebook, but I don't post. I just check on my son once in awhile. I have an X account, but I never post there, either. If I am going to post anything, anywhere, it's an occasional comment, never an image or a photo, on my Reddit account, which fortunately is anonymous. (Well, as anonymous as an online account can be, I suppose.)
