As I pass 3/4 of a century in age.... three quick thoughts about getting older

I read a number of blogs on Wordpress
and came across these thoughts that made me stop and think
about getting closer
to the end of life's road.

Is it the ‘slowness’ ?.
I am not able to walk as fast as I used to.
I am not able to work as hard as I used to.
There is forced retardation to our erstwhile youthful pace.
The joints creak. The back hurts. Is this what we dread?

Is it that point where the generations that came after you
seem to be operating in a different world that you are not able to easily fit into,
or even relate to in terms of technology, lingo, or living values?

Is it the passage of time
that does not allow you to pursue certain things
because the window of opportunity
has closed?

Beyond a point, you don’t get ‘do overs’, second chances.

So one more time..
a reminder..
that it is the journey..
not

the destination.

Life's end? Not when you have just put a 78 year-old in to The White House. Not when a Centurion can raise almost £40M by walking round his garden. And if that's a surprise, what about an 80 year-old climbing Mount Everest?
I in no way was saying 'all' those at that age would experience the same conditions
I was speaking for myself and those out there who do
find their step a little slower
or
they are now realizing that some of their life experiences should have been savored more.

...but I am sure you lament something from the 'old' days

like respect and appreciation for what they have.

Hubby & I are now 79, and we recently bought a very active puppy.

I go to bed thinking ,'what were we thinking?'
Maybe you were thinking on the days you both feel like not doing anything
that puppy will break through the fog of sitting around...enjoy him !

Well, I must be doing something right...I am in my eighties and I will admit I go a tad slower...but not much and everyone here at the Ranch are under the weather with backs, etc...a new dump of snow our way, etc...but not 'me'...I feel great! I don't remember seeing you guys when I went to Alaska in 2018.

It was the snow storm of 2015-2016 that had me moving to be with my family in Texas. The homestead is still up and running on the Elliott near Livengood in fact my old home/cabin of 14 years was renovated and visitors were allowed to stay there. Now I watch my daughter shoveling two foot snowfalls this year and wonder how much longer before she heads to the lower '48'.

On my 25th birthday i decided to celebrate the quarter century with a hike high in the mountains to look over the bay and reflect. Well, smog covered the view below and I walked home disheartened. Now, approaching the three-quarter mark i'm not so sure i could even make the hike. What that signifies I have no idea but I'm happy to have made it another 50 years.

I believe that not a day goes by that I do not have a 'think back' thought. Here in Texas I barely make the one mile walk around the apartment complex all the time thinking of the not to far in the past years when I bushwhacked through the Alaskan brush guiding hunters and fishermen, and here having a hard time doing this walk or even walking the shoreline while fishing nearby.

But as you said
I am happy to be able to put on foot in front of the other
to continue my walk on life's road.

I try to do at least a mile and a half a day in order to keep everything moving. So far so good...everything is still moving! I wish the snow would quit falling as has been two days in a row and another day of snowfall promised to go. In Manitoba, we never get to 'store' our winter clothes. One of my daughters living in Toronto keeps bragging about her flowers and green grass. She is mean that way!

You may not know it but I lived for 20 years in a tiny cabin in the wilderness of Northern Alaska
so I understand about never really putting away any winter gear.
I too start off every year trying to walk at least a mile a day (one lap around the apartment complex), but I have to say by mid May or June when its in the 90's and just walking out the front door is like opening your oven my walking goes by the wayside.

We are now 87 and 86, our days of running around are over, but we still very much enjoy the memories.
...and unlike myself, make sure you savor those moments.
