As Seen on TV...rip-offs

We did our weekly shopping today. As my wife was browsing at Kohl's, I went next door to Menard's, and looked around. There is a handy Universal socket that is frequently advertised on TV for $20.

RED DOG UNIVERSAL SOCKET

As I was looking in the tool section, I found virtually the same thing for $1.50. I bought 2 of them.

There are rarely any items advertised on these TV ads that can't be found at a far better price elsewhere.

I have to wonder why "As seen on TV" bolsters the value or even the need for a product. Now "seen in the tool chests of mechanics, house cleaning ladies, or fisherman's tackle boxes" may tell you something, but the fact that it has been on TV is not very important.
