Ash Wednesday - February 22nd

As a Humanist, I respect people's freedom to worship, but I still can't understand what good giving up things you otherwise like does. Now, if you were to give some time to help a good cause, that would sound much more positive.

I hope we can still observe our special days and what they stand for and don't have to defend them too.

Having said that, I do not observe Ash Wednesday but I have always seen it observed by friends and some relatives. In that way, it's part of my culture as well. I enjoyed reading through your posts GAlady. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one....the holidays are not marked on my calendar, so I had no idea it was the start of Lent. I missed Pancake Day!
Oh no , I remembered pancake day , lol..it was plastered all over my supermarkets

Is this a religious day…!
Yes @charry, it is.

The Christian year is broken is broken into seasons. Each season has meaning and associated activities or rituals. For example, Advent is the season before Christmas. It is a time of preparation, for spiritual and earthly cleaning in preparation for the coming of the Christ child. Then there follows the twelve days of the Christmas season which is a time of feasting and rejoicing.

Lent is the season that comes before Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes are a sign of death and mourning. Lent is a solemn season of self examination and reflection. Fasting can be part of it because it heightens awareness of the hunger of the poor. Prayer and scripture reading is encouraged. Lent continues until the Easter cycle of services - the night of the last Supper and the arrest of Jesus, Good Friday, the day of his crucifixion and Easter Sunday, the day of the resurrection.

Another season is Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples in the upper room. It takes place 50 days after Easter.

Each season is marked by a liturgical colour, purple for Lent and Advent, White/Gold for Easter, Red for Pentecost and at other times the liturgical colours are either green or white.

But today is my baby cousins 73rd birthday. I was 10 years old when she was born, and was so happy because she was an absolutely beautiful baby and child. I adored her!
