At least twelve people have been stabbed in a horror knife rampage in Hamburg - with six victims fighting for their lives, police have said.

The attacker, who carried out a stabbing spree at the central railway station in Germany's second-biggest city, has been arrested.

Officers said the assailant was a 39-year-old woman who was believed to have acted alone. They also said there was no sign that the suspect had a political motive.
Hamburg's fire service said that six people sustained life-threatening injuries, while another three were seriously injured and three had slight injuries, German news agency dpa reported.

Police, however, said later that there were no 'valid figures' yet but that 'several' people had life-threatening injuries.

The suspect targeted people on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 in the station, according to police.

The station in downtown Hamburg is a major hub for local, regional and long-distance trains.

The Hamburg police reported a 'major police operation' on X earlier this evening.

'There is currently a major police operation in #Hamburg on #Hauptbahnhof!

'We are investigating the background and will provide further information here shortly,' the force added.

Pictures on social media show crowds gathered outside the transport hub, as emergency service vehicles and forensics swarmed the scene.

According to German newspaper Bild, some of the injured were being treated on trains.

17 seriously injured now... I'm trying to work out how she could have stabbed so many. I'm thinking rather than go berserk as one might Imagine, that she just quietly walked up behind people and stabbed them, how else could she have managed to attack so many people without people stopping her...

The woman (Lydia) was well known to the police, had injured a child months before this attack and was in a mental asylum but released the day before. Obviously the physician and staff thought that she was not dangerous anymore.

The headline says:
"Lydia S. (39) was released from a psychiatric ward the day before the murder - In February, she allegedly attacked a six-year-old girl".

Some excerpts:
According to Bild, Lydia S., who was born in Braunschweig, was admitted to a specialist clinic in Bremerhaven until 22 May - for four days. She is said to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia. In this clinical picture, those affected suffer from hallucinations and delusions.

Bild also reports that Lydia S. allegedly attacked a six-year-old girl in Terminal 1 at Hamburg Airport back in February 2025. She is currently under investigation for assault as a result of the incident.

According to Bild, there was another incident in Hamburg's Ochsenzoll psychiatric hospital: On the ward where she was admitted in March 2025, she is also alleged to have committed an assault. It is unclear where the 39-year-old was between hospital stays; she is said to be homeless.

What should be done with such people?

Who knows ?.. drugs.. alcohol...mental deterioration... it's just so unusual for it to be a Woman..and on her own... she's caused so much carnage !
Got to be some rage and anger issues in there as well. Something didn't go her way in life and now she's taking out on society.

..or just completely brain damaged.... there's too much of this now, since they abolished mental health hospitals for all but the most deranged, and exchanged it for ''care in the community''...

Devotion. Be it to a God, or to an ideal. A belief that one is "right", and all others are "wrong". More so, that one is right and worthy, and anyone else is wrong, and unworthy. Desperation. Otherness. Exclusion. Hatred. Frustration.

There are lot of steps before we can suggest illness, mental or otherwise.

If she’s a paranoid, schizophrenic and actively hallucinating, then she never should’ve been released from the hospital. Often these people have no idea what they are even doing. I can’t believe they let her go after she tried to hurt a little girl.

Severely mentally ill and homeless. What could go wrong?

I'm amazed they would release someone that ill who had no place to go. Of course she's going to lose track of her medication, become exhausted, delusional and psychotic, and begin to hallucinate.

Her doctors said she had paranoid schizophrenia, paranoid means afraid. She wouldn't have been angry or hateful or devoted to God or feeling superior to others. She would have been terrified. She would have had an overwhelming feeling of impending doom and fear.

The neurotransmitters in her brain would have been scrambled, it can be seen in brain scans, so that she would hear voices coming from the outside and believe those people around her were threatening her with death. She would have experienced the terror of nightmares while awake.

It's likely that she thought the people around her were aliens hiding in human suits trying to kill all the "real" people, so that she thought she was protecting others as well.

We need to provide institutions for such incurable people to stay in permanently for their own safety as well as others.

te sad part is we had those insitutions...but 90 % were closed down in favour of ''care in the community''... which in essence means..no-one cares.. whose going to care for these people..?..it's unfair to ask the public to live among dangerous peple...

We have the problem with mentally ill people too.
When some nut shoots a bunch of people, our government would rather stand on the bodies and use them as a podium to attack guns rather than deal with the real problem.

Well, if the nut doesn't have a gun..........
I feel our nation is filled with mentally ill, drug and alcohol addicted people.
The internet makes it worse.
I have no ideas on what to do. None. Most mentally ill are victims. Obviously not all.

If the nut doesn't have a gun, he/she will use a knife, drive a car into a crowd, and who knows what they'll use.
If someone wants to kill people, there are a lot of objects they can use.
We need to treat mentally ill people and get the dangerous ones off the street.

Della, this isn't an outlier, it's the norm. The streets are full of people with mental illnesses, often exacerbated by drug use. You're amazed they would have released this person, I'd of been amazed if they hadn't. This is how these people are handled in the modern age. It is considered acceptable, and it's simply how things are.

Of course, it's terrible when things get to this point, but again, it's all part of the risk society pays.
