Aussie teen accused of making ‘fully functional’ 3D printed assault rifle in home

While it may look like a toy, the plastic weapon could potentially fire 15 lethal 9mm rounds at once.

Just a FYI:
I'm not in favor of any home-made firearm. But anyone with firearms knowledge knows this article is pure sensational B.S.
There is NO SUCH THING as a plastic gun with a plastic chamber & barrel that can withstand the high pressure & high temperature of any small arms cartridge - especially a high-pressure cartridge like the 9mm. If someone did fire it, they would have an exploding bomb in their hands.

It reminds me of when the Austrian Glock pistol was designed in the '80's with a polymer grip frame. Ignorant people read some of the B.S. articles & gasped: "Oh, my God....the gun is plastic; it won't show up on x-rays; it can easily be taken on an airplane."

Do you have anything to back that up?

According to Google, the chamber pressure of a standard 9mm round is about 35,000 psi. I don't know anything about 3d printer materials, but I doubt a second round could be fired by such a plastic weapon.

I remember the concern with Glocks being they wouldn't be picked up by metal detectors.

Here's a video of a guy making a gun barrel from black pipe, readily available from your local Home Depot. It looks like he also made the chamber.
Note: you would need a lathe to do that.

I used to work with a guy that made [steel] guns at home in his shop all the time ....... some were fully automatic. Worry not ..... he is now deceased.

He charged a fortune for them, as they were all custom [specs & such] and no serial numbers.

"3-D-printed guns can be lethal and fire hundreds of rounds, but they aren't durable. 3-D-printed guns aren't as durable as traditional guns, and many shooting ranges ban them from being used. Jul 31, 2018" from Google search: "DO 3D PRINTER AUTOMATIC WEAPONS WORK?"

Isn't technology wonderful? It seems to solve many of our problems. The problem, of course, is that when technology solves a problem, it also causes new problems.

This story reminds me of a movie I watched a long time ago where a prisoner in jail carved a gun out of a bar of soap and then used black shoe polish to color it to make it look more real. It worked and they escaped. Makes about as much sense as a plastic gun.

1. A homemade gun like that is a single shot. Reload after each shot. Not very attractive to a mass shooter.
2. Poor accuracy for two reasons: No rifling in the barrel, so bullet is not stabilized, which results in keyholing (as he mentioned)
Also, he made the barrel "38 caliber." A 38 caliber bullet is actually .357 inch in diameter. A 9mm bullet is .355 inch in diameter. That .002 inch difference results in a poor fit between the bullet & barrel.

I think it was "Dillinger." After he put the officer in jail, he tossed the gun in & laughed at him. 😂
And while he robbed banks, "You're being robbed by the Dillinger gang. That's the best there is. You'll have great stories to tell your kids."

Plastic printed guns won't trigger metal detectors.
Even if they didn't, the ammunition would.
"Metal detectors can find bullets. Metal detectors operate by sensing changes in the electromagnetic field around a metal object. Because bullets are made of electrically conductive materials like brass, lead and steel a metal detector will get a strong “signal” from a bullet."

Yes. If this was true, most guns would be made of plastic (or whatever material they supposedly used) and the industry would save trillions in short order.
If true, the bullets are also plastic (or whatever).

Years ago, I remember another rumor that CIA hit men used a bullet made of ice that dissolved in the body, leaving no evidence behind.
Well, no evidence except a dead person who wasn't thirsty......... 😁

Actually, I remember that. And pretty soon the story became, they had poison in them, remember? At least around here it did. The "ice" melted, and released the poison.

My paternal great-grandfather was a gun-smith. He'd been a Texas Ranger in his youth, and spent a year as a special agent on a task-force that was stopping weapons smuggling along the southern border .....during the FBI's infancy, so the story goes.

A well-hydrated corpse; camera-ready.

Because when they're twice as bad, you have to kill them twice.

Is there a video of the actual firing of such a gun, and how many times, and any damage to person or property?
