Austin has eels. Very interesting article.

They are being farmed by the million in Holland, though, unlike salmon, only for breeding. The elvers are returned to the sea to complete their natural life cycle.

As "glass eels" the tiny fry sell for thousands of dollars a kilo in the east.

I'm very partial to a smoked eel, though you don't see them often.

TreeGuyh:

A long interesting article on a topic I knew nothing about. Eke! slimy, don't want to swim with them.
Viewed a doc. of semi-hermit in Maine that catches Eels in a river, but only during certain times of the year (which ties into your article)
He sells them locally; I assumed the folks in Maine ate them. Now it appears they may be shipped to Japan.
All the same, a topic I knew nothing about-good post.

Smoked eel is not bad at all.

My wife’s uncle had an eel farm in southern Georgia back in the 70’s. He was raising them for the Japanese domestic market. The ponds flooded and those eels went who knows where.

Ever see a hellbender? I used to see them in the north Georgia mountains when I was trout fishing many years ago, they’re a salamander almost three feet long. Gives you the willies when you disturb one and it wiggles over your foot.

My grandma use to fry eels and they would flap around in the pan like they were still alive. I didn't eat them but once I had smoked eels and I loved them.
