Australia Day coming up on January 26

I'm sure I'll see the fireworks while watching the Aussie Open. They show them every year. Happy Australia day to all the Aussies st SF.

We normally go to the city (Adelaide ) South Australia ,to watch the multicultural parade it's really colourful and interesting seeing all the different nationalities in traditional dress

Every local government area has its own local celebration. I won't be going this year but Garrison Point on the Georges River is always good for a day out - all kinds of multicultural food to sample and a concert in the afternoon. I've never stayed for the evening but there could be fireworks.

What's the significance of January 26?
It is the date of the landing of the first fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788.
It is controversial because the indigenous people are conflicted by this date since it was the beginning of their displacement from their lands. Australia, as it later was called, was declared Terra Nullius, meaning that no-one owned it so the British claimed it for the Crown.

Because it falls in the hottest part of Summer, it is a great opportunity for BBQs, for a day at the beach or picnics by a river. In Sydney itself, multiculturalism is very much on display as more recent immigrant communities join in parades with national dress, singing, dancing and exotic cuisine.

Yep, we know it, I have tried to do a typical Australian meal like I do for other countries on special days but always get stuck on this.. My first BBQ of the year is that day though and yes we do shrimp!! I often will do a Peach Melba after Nellie and of course I make Lamingtons, usually at Christmas but I do them that day too

ANTaR (Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation) have requested all australians not to recognise or celebrate invasion day (as many of us call it). they want the date to be changed so everyone can celebrate australia day without the connection to the white invasion which is so painful for indigenous people. its no celebration for them.

i will respect their wishes and just have a day at home on 26th january. https://antar.org.au/

Thanks Ray but neither of us drink beer or any other alcohol these days.

We had lunch out at the mall and then went to see 'Lion' at the movies.
It was an appropriate choice for Australia Day.

Later we watched Federer win his semi final at the Australian Open on the telly.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to consume two. Like the Duke said, "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, Settler".

Happy Australia Day Warri, and all those "down under!" ;)

Hmm, the whole thing is questionable at best, but I will drink to honor it, as I drink to honor all things great or trivial...
