I agree problem gambling hurts, but to have the government control your life or choices, is a bit if overreach.

My ex was a gambling addict. Most people think gamblers loose, but bet more to get out of debt, but the debt keeps growing. No. It's that they get a high from the act of gambling. Winning only means they can gamble more, it's not what's causing them to gamble. When we parted, she was lying about everything, I couldn't believe a word she said, she was missing work, and at Off Track Betting for hours each day. Plus she was spending $5,000/year just on lottery tickets. She had to have multiple charge cards. She declared bankruptcy several times, multiple cars repossessed. Once, I found her frantically feeding money into a slot machine, as fast as she could. The only way I can describe the look on her face was orgasm. This is an addiction just as heroin is.
Most addicts make good for good addict regardless of chemical or endeavor. Most addiction comes with lack of impulse control which is why gambling addicts can't resist the urge to try and make it up or go for more. Same for many chemical addicts, their current high isn't enough for them so the do more or expand to other substances
Until the addict wants to stop/change on their own for themselves they won't. Even locking people won't work unless they want to change while in jail. Best bet is get out the addict's way let them hit a bottom where they go splat.
