Avocados

Being a 'back alley cook' has taught me a few truisms. Put a sealed bottle of honey or jelly in the same room as me, somehow I'll get it on my fingers without opening them. This morning I rediscovered another fact of life. An avocado seed is worse than trying to pick up a wet bar of soap in the shower. The seed gets slimy with no defined edges to pick it up from the floor. You have to have a roll of paper towels just to peel the darn things. They claim they're healthy, I figure the only health benefits come from bending over several times trying to corral the seed, and contiunually wiping your hands trying to get the green slime off your fingers.

But worth every bit of it. After you finally corral the seed, put a few toothpicks into it, suspend it over a glass of water until roots form and grow your own little bit of greenery. How do you use your avocado?

RR, I didn't watch the video but have watched a few on youtube, one to peel it, the second to get the seed out. Removing the seed is a dangerous task for me especially if I miss the entire half in my palm. Need I say more. The 1st to peel worked but if the fruit is over ripe the peel is usually hard then I have to hold the thing without cutting it in 4 quarters. Just not worth the effort. [gennie], As for how I use them usually just halved then sliced across ate with a fork. The faster I can get them in my mouth the further ahead everyone is.

Here is how I peal and deseed an avocado.

Cut the avocado in half, without cutting the seed. Just go around it.
Twist the avocado and one half will come away from the seed. Use a spoon to remove the seed.
Use the same spoon to slice the meat away from the peal. Just go around the inside of the peal. Then you can use the spoon to get to any meat still inside the peal.

Living in the southwest, avocados are an almost daily part of life.
Don't wait until they are mushy, just a bit soft and they are ripe.

This is my favorite way

I just cut in half, twist, as Patio Life said, and then for the other half, (and to remove the seed) I just use a knife. I just kind of gently "chop" at the seed. Not technically "the safest" but it doesn't take much. The knife just has to get stuck in to the seed a little ways.

Then "twist" the avacodo while holding the knife handle in place, and this separates from the seed. Seed is stuck to knife. Then, tap the knife on the edge of the wastebasket and it's all done. No more runaway avacado seeds.

Try adding a little salt. If you have the coarse rock salt even better. Complete game changer. I don't find them that appealing without salt; pretty bland really and just very mooshy.

Yes, it is a bit risky. But I've found that using a heavy chef's knife (that's very sharp) on the seed makes it safer because you don't have to hit it so hard. And, when you're cutting into the avocado, use very light pressure so you don't cut through the peel. Or, you could wear one of those cut-resistant gloves while you're holding the avocado.

For lunch I just had a toasted slice of Sesame Ezekial Bread spread with smushed avocado and sprinkled with Trader Joe's Everything but the Bagel seasoning. Food for the Gods.

I've always loved avocado but hated to peel it, such an awful mess. Then I heard about your method and it's a breeze. I use a knife to pull up the seed. I wish I could grow it but it won't make it in Tucson. Sometimes I chop it and squirt some sriracha for a quick snack, and also use it in green salads or as a side for Mexican dishes.
