Avoiding stress for senior dogs

This is perhaps a very silly question.
Our lovely dog is getting old, she's a mixed breed in good health but she has slowed down markedly, is quite grey and wants a quiet life.

Since she is a short coated dog, we have never sent her for grooming. My husband now thinks she smells a bit so we have booked her for a shampoo, claw-cut, ear and teeth clean.

The thing is she's never had this before, she is always nervous and stressed out for vets visits. If we take her for this grooming, could it be too much stress for her instead of being good for her? What if we stay and be nearby? Otherwise she will think we have left her with strangers and will not come back. She loves people and I'm sure they would be very nice to her.

I'm so worried I think I will cancel as perhaps it's just not worth it! We only wanted a treat for her to feel better but she may not see it as a pampering.

I'm on your side Rose. My dog gets really stressed over vet visits, nail clipping, riding in the car, any of those things, and she gets so upset over being left with anyone but me she quit eating completely when I left her here at home, with my son who she loves, for just three days.

Right now she has some bald patches on her underside and i think it might be a fungus. Rather than take her to the vet I've ordered some medicated anti-fungal shampoo from Chewy and plan to give her a bath with it. Anything to avoid the dreaded doc. Who is actually the sweetest man.

Consider trying one of the CBD formulas for pets, I've heard they do wonders
