At least in this part of the country anyway. Among the 20 & 30 somethings this word seems to pop up in texts, emails, conversation etc. What a AWESOME EVENT IT WAS. HE IS SIMPLY AWESOME. ETC.ETC.

I'm 62 and I say it wayyyyy too much. I don't know where I picked it up , but I can't get rid of it. I also say the word "Cool" .. Boy does that date me !

Awesome has been around in my parts of the woods for a long time now. We have gotto come up with something new. Let's invent a new word, okay? Any ideas?

More than a couple of years, sort of old now, I cringe every time I hear it now. Remember the commercials and it was big from a lego movie a few years back as well.

The commercial where after it aired even more people were using the word awesom followed by sauce.

PS, I'm never going to stop using "cool", because, he it's just SO COOL!

Wow Lon- it's awesome that you finally noticed.....they've been over using the word "awesome" for what, at least 30 years. :p

The problem with "awesome" is - what's next. The waitress says, How is it?", I say, "Fine", she says, "Awesome". If "fine" is "awesome" to her - what would "great" be??

With the large latin population maybe in the not to distant future this will be used.

Que Chévere

An explanation by someone online.

You can use chevere in a lot of different ways, it can mean, "how awesome", like you stated.
Or it can be used to describe the way a person is: "Mi novio es bien chevere." This means, my boyfriend is really nice, "chevere", to my understanding is a bit informal, however it's not exactly slang. We use it a lot in El Salvador, I'm not sure how popular it is in the rest of Latin America.

I liken "awesome" to "great/terrific/amazing". Must admit I say "cool" a fair bit. At least I don't still say "snazzy".

I've sorta grown used to 'Awesome'.....don't care for it, don't use it but I put up with it.

I'll tell what REALLY starches my shorts and that's saying 'My Bad' instead of 'I'm Sorry'......absolutely hate it.

Along the same lines, what's with this bumping knuckles thing instead of shaking hands ?......don't and won't do it.

Some people do it for sanitary reasons, others, just do it as thing of the times, I don't have an issue with it, but, I tend to shake hands, unless someone approaches me with the bump thing. Rare that someone does, and I'm usually thrown off at first balance, but, I'll bump hands with them, it kind of makes me giggle inside. I'm cool like that. :playful:

I use the word cool much more than awesome, neither of those words bother me at all. I usually shake hands, but there's been a few fist bumps in my personal experience. I think the bumps are much more natural than the high fives or low fives, something I've never had much of and find awkward to embrace.

What I cannot stand is "like". Between every sentence there has to be "like"! Like what? Drives me crazy. I hardly use the word awesome (unless it's with my grandchildren)....I say "that's great" or "that's wonderful".

I see the 'bump' as pretty much a sanitary thing. At my work(prison) sanitation is a huge issue, to the point of being OCD. The bump serves to satisfy the ritual, while avoiding the common contamination potential of a full on hand shake.

ginormous https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ginormous

Origin and Etymology of ginormous
gigantic + enormous
First Known Use: 1942

humongous https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/humongous

Origin and Etymology of humongous
perhaps alteration of huge + monstrous

I didn't think these were "real" words, but they are in the dictionary so....

I think "humongous" and "ginormous" are just, like, awesome, man. Fist bump! Cool! What? Oh, my bad. Whateva.

"awesome" is an effective word so why not use it. "pretty" is effective, "crazy" is effective", why shouldn't they be used? They're just adjectives among a slew of adjectives...they're there for the using. Just be glad "groovy" and "fannnntastic" wore themselves out long ago.

And I vaguely recall a character on an old TV sitcom who's catchphrase was "dyno-mite". Glad that disappeared.

I still use fantastic..lol

Awesome, been around for many years in my part of the woods.

The word I'm hearing a lot now is, perfect. I'm not sure if I like that one or not.

For a long time I used the word, absolutely. I would pronounce it like the way Sylvester Stallone did in his Rocky movies.
