AWESOME!!! The New Catchword?

"awesome" is an effective word so why not use it. "pretty" is effective, "crazy" is effective", why shouldn't they be used? They're just adjectives among a slew of adjectives...they're there for the using. Just be glad "groovy" and "fannnntastic" wore themselves out long ago.

along with "far out".

And in England, at least according to all the British shows I watch on TV, the word for everything even mildly good is "Brilliant!"

The problem with the word awesome is just that it's used to describe every little thing, so when something that is *really* awesome comes along, it falls flat.

The view of the Grand Canyon is awesome. A batch of cupcakes can never be awesome, imo. Maybe laced brownies, but that is a whole different story.

A newer one I don't care much for is gifting. It's like making a participle out of a noun. Sounds weird. What happened to just giving?

That's true! Often shortened to brill
Also fantastic is still in use ( by me) and cool by the younger ones is back in again.
I love the Lego Movie song ( everything is awesome);)

Actually, I do too, some of the movie characters crack me up. Everything is AWESOME! It's the way the word became so over used, mostly, by the some adults 20's 30's early 40's who I encountered during the past couple of years, contributed to what caused awesome to fall so out of favor with me. I had conversations with a lot of young people, many who used it the way some people use, like. Quiet a few used it after every sentence someone else completed.

Like you know when like, yes and like, yeah and like you know like, like, like, like, that's how the word awesome was being used to the point of ad nauseam. I know, the use of ad nauseam falls in the same category. :D

I went to the store yesterday --- other person, Awesome!
I just got back from the grocery store, ---- AWESOME!
Oh, no need to leave the door open ---- Totally AWESOME!
I broke my leg, but, no need to worry, I'm better now ----, That's AWESOME!
how about I slap you from here into next week ---- uh, uh, AWESOME?

They were saying "awesome" back when I was in college in the late 70's - early 80's.

Possibly before, though I don't remember hearing it in high school.

I think in HS we still just said "cool" or "far out".
