Thanks to the internet, apps, and what have you, news and podcasts just keep all that junk going on all day! So, Sometimes in the morning, I like to have the REAL quiet time. Don't turn on the "tube" or screen until much later. Now a television is a flat screen tv. They have even invented a tv without a screen! What's next?!

I agree. There is 24/7 "commentary'. There's a difference in reporting events, and yammering about them. What's kind of weird is those 24/7 sports channels. When there's no game, it's just a bunch of "TV personalities" yammering about anything to fill time, which is pretty much those 24/7 "news" channels. fancicoffee13 is right, both are hard to tale on an empty stomach.

I find those 24/7 news and sports channels seems to fill time by bringing in different guest commentators to say the exact same thing they have already said over and over again for the past several hours. Unless it is something I am really riveted to like the events that happened on January 6th at the Capital Building or 9/11 , I usually don't watch those 24/7 news channels.

These days I’m not watching any more than 3 hrs tv at most. One hr of news, 2 of programs. My favorite memory of “olden days “ tv was the nightly sign off with the National Anthem, usually with some background pictures, then switching to test pattern.

Today, the average 30 minute "News" program consists of at least 14 minutes of commercials....mostly that "Ask your Doctor" nonsense. If a person wants to keep up with the news, they can find more in 5 minutes on the Internet, than listening to the "celebrities" chatting.

Yes, for greater peace of mind and lower blood pressure.

Are we any the better for all this? I don't think so. We also know that a lot of what we are told is censored. We are manipulated by the media. The more time spent watching tv and on the internet, the more our thinking is being influenced.

And there was the “It’s 10:00. Do you know where your children are?”
I agree though that we can get too much news. Frankly, I often don’t follow news at all sometimes - life is less stressful that way.

Yes! I wish we still had that too!

Have you ever counted how many commercials there are till the program starts again?

You can and do have the ability to manage how much you let your mind be manipulated.

Unfortunately, that's not true for everyone, which is why we need to be careful what our children watch.
Sorry to hear that. But that is true about the children. My daughter did what she could to manage what they saw on the pc including putting a "nanny" on the home pc.

Here in the Uk the average 30 minute show on commercial TV show has a run time of 26 minutes giving 3 mins for TV ads and credits ,.

the average hour long show has approx 6 minutes of commercials, and a 90 min show just 3 x 3 mins ad breaks...

Then of course our 2 major broadcasting channels, BBC1 and BBC2 .. have no adverts or commercials at all.

During my business travel years, I learned that the news came on at 11pm on the east coast and 10pm in the mid-west, which with the different time zones was the same time.

Most of the TV that I watch now, I have recorded and watch at MY convenience.
