Bad Food at Public Function

What would you do if you thought someone brought bad food to a cookout, picnic or potluck supper?

For instance, I was at a church supper once where someone had brought chicken and biscuits. The biscuits had little beetles through them (probably got into the flour or baking mix). I told (and showed) the person manning the tables and the dish was removed - I hope it wasn't what they brought.

I would discreetly tell whoever is in charge about the situation. I has a similar situation a few years back. I had gone to an antique shop open house. They had little platters of cookies around for those who attended. I noticed one women took a cookie, bit into it, and I guess not to her liking, put it back on the tray and took another kind. That really turned my stomach and I immediately mentioned it to the owner of the shop. The platter was removed and a couple of dealers kept a close eye on the women from then on. At least in your case maybe the women had no idea the bugs were in the biscuits but in my case there was no excuse for her actions.

That's what I thought.

I know when my mom passed and I cleaned out the kitchen, I had to throw away many bags of flour and a few boxes of cornmeal that got "buggy". What a waste. Now I keep anything that isn't canned in the fridge. Keeps a lot better.

She was a stockpiler, though. Her reasoning, "If the bomb drops, you'll be glad I bought all that food!" Well, if a bomb drops, I think having bags of buggy flour will not be my top priority.

Foods like flour and cornmeal and grains won't invite bugs if they are stored in air tight glass or plastic jars. I remove them from boxes/packaging and store into my own plastic or glass containers.

Maybe the lady who brought the buggy biscuits had bad eyesight.

Something a bit dramatic but face saving for all concerned...imagine you're at a potluck and the same idea. Maybe a plateful of baked product, with baked bugs. At the count of three you might pick up the dish to arrange it closer and WHOOOPS! Oh NO!!! <<<the dish has spilled on the floor>>>> Oh Sharon!!!...and I know you worked so hard on those!!! Ohhh deeear!!! Oh it's okay, I'll clean it up...<<<big hugs>>> Sure, we have lots of food here, no problem

My hubby told me when he was in Vietnam (jungle) it was rare to get things like bread and when they did, it always was buggy. They were glad to get it and ate it anyway. I could be wrong about this but I think there can be larvae inside flour, grains and cereal and you can bring them home from the store! Horrible thought but they come from somewhere.
