Almost everyone I've mentioned this to said that when Gus goes, I should get another cat. From my standpoint, I really don't think it that good an option. Considering my age and the life spans that most of my cats had (I'd say average 15 years), there's a good chance the cat would outlive me. Then it would become someone else's responsibility. Not fair to them (especially if they don't like cats, and I know my executor HATES cats) or to the cat, in that case. I have put a clause in my will that in the event good homes cannot be found for any pets in my possession at the time of my death, they should be humanely euthanized.
When I tell the well-meaning advisors my reasons for not wanting another pet, they say something to the effect, "Oh, but they are such good company!"
