Can't believe things like this happen, why aren't the parents reasonable enough to control this poor child's diet?

A "morbidly obese" two-year-old has undergone bariatric surgery in Saudi Arabia, doctors are now proudly reporting. This radical, permanent maiming of the digestive system of a child was done, they say, after "dieting failed."

The press is reporting that the doctors in charge of this fiasco "...were unable to ascertain whether the child's parents stuck to the diet." This was apparently all the justification they needed to permanently remove a crucial part of the child's digestive system.

So where do we begin with the insanity in all this?

First off, I'm pretty sure that two-year-old infants cannot hop in the car and cruise down to the local McDonald's to buy a half-dozen Happy Meals.

I don't think there's any two-year-old who can whip out a credit card at the local buffet and snarf down five thousand calories a day.

So allow me to state the obvious: Two-year-olds eat what you give them to eat, period!

If a two-year-old is "morbidly obese," then his parents are infinitely stupid. Were they spoon-feeding the kid ice cream all day long while asking, "Why is our child getting so fat?"

Are they really that stupid? And are the doctors so stupid that they can't simply tell the parents to stop feeding the little guy so much food?

I like the author's analogy of Western medicine to religion, quoting "medical sin" and how you go to the "priests" to be "cured" and made normal. That's a thought that's going to produce at least ONE good post on my blog ...

And I agree with him - it IS the parents that should be held accountable here. But to read some of the comments on the article you'd think he broke several Commandments - people just don't want to drop their illusions.

First these parents need to have some tests on the baby to make sure their is no underlying illness causing the excess weight and if negative then the parents need to be made accountable for the babies obesity, at 2 years old a baby can't get to all the food to feed itself, i consider it appalling and these parents are idiots and need to be dealt with. They must live on Maccas and feed it to the baby as well

After all it's not rocket science is it, it's just plain common sense that these parents seem devoid of

Seems pretty simple to me. If they'd starved him to death they be banged up for murder. Overfeeding him to the point morbid obesity is the the same level of abuse. Bang 'em up, put the child into a safer environment and get the weight off him.

Might be wise to save a cell for the 'quacks' too.
