The BBC banned loads of poplalr songs.... J'Taime being just one of them... this being another.... it was very annoying to us as teens , we could hear the songs at the dance hall.. but we couldn't hear them on the radio...
Lola is about a relationship between a man and a “woman” who turns out to be a transvestite.
But it wasn’t this gender confusion that worried the BBC. The song was banned for including the words “coca-cola” which was against their policy on product placement.
Davies had to interrupt the band’s American tour to fly back to London to re-record the lyric as “cherry-cola” for the single release.

They also banned this song....
Why ?... because Roger Datrey stutters on some of the lyrcs... .. and the BBC decided that would offend real life stutterers...
However the songs sold many records despite being banned the BBC had to eat it's words and relax the ban

All in all the BBC banned something like 70 songs which ultimately became chart hits.....

this is the original which was banned, and the ban was never liftedWho sang J'Taime in the UK? This is the only version I've heard and I can understand why it would be banned.

The Governor of Indiana banned the playing of "Louie Louie" on the airwaves back in my day. Apparently it was obscene, but I think if you worked hard enough, you could find the lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner in it.....

Funny, I was just thinking about Monster Mash the other day along with The Lurch. I didn't know they banned it. I think it was a big hit here and back then I wouldn't have known anything about the BBC.
BBC probably really would have banned this song for being too morbid! Here's an explanation of the title change posted on YouTube:
